I think some issues are going to vary by location; in the Wedge I wouldn't worry excessively about vandalism or theft, but the streets there are tight, especially in winter (even worse when snow restrictions kick in!), so I'd be more worried about someone dinging it when driving past, or trying to squeeze into a too-small parking spot. Or if you travel for more than a few days at a time and some neighbor anxious about finding parking calls 311 on you (I believe you can only park in one spot for three days, but am not 100% sure).

I think the biggest theft issue is right around the lakes, as there are some professional gangs of thieves who target all the people who leave their valuables in the car when they go for a walk or run.

There are also private garages for rent, so if you find the perfect house or duplex and it doesn't come with parking and you really, really want that garage you could still probably find one.
This. I would be much more worried about getting my mirrors/bumpers/side panels scratched/dinged than getting broken into. During the winter a lot of the streets get super tight. For example, this past winter, after the parking restrictions went into effect, but before they extended them to Dupont, I actually had to back down Dupont because I physically could not fit between the cars parked on both sides of the street. Luckily about a week later they restricted parking to one side of the street for the rest of the winter, but I'm sure a half-dozen people lost mirrors on Dupont that week.

Just don't leave purses, ipods, gps systems, ect sitting in your car, and there's no reason for someone to break in.

This. I was an intern at the Southwest Journal this past semester and I swear, most of the crimes I found were people who left their GPS units in plain sight. It's as if people think crime doesn't exist.
