How do you tip your hair stylist? (how much, buy)

Some places charge $15 for a mens haircut, others charge $30 and up. How do you tip? Based on percentage? How much do you normally tip?

Well...I only go to the $15 places, but I usually tip around $4.00, which is well in excess of a 20% tip that would be around the lines of customary tip at a restaurant, but I figure it's still only $4 for his/her time and talent, regardless of percentage. I usually do the same at a restaurant if the bill was around $15.00 (all of this assumes good service, of course).

Just got a haircut yesterday at Pro Cuts that just opened in Dinkytown. (If you're looking for a good deal, they're doing $9 haircuts right now for the whole sha-bang: haircut, shampoo, hot towel (hardly necessary, but felt nice), and scalp/shoulder massage).

I tip roughly 20 percent. For my $9 cut, I gave a $2 tip. If my cut is $20, I usually round up to $5, especially since the lady I've used is really good and knows what I want.

I go $3 on a $14 cut, which is 21% I hate that it always appears they are looking over my shoulder as I write the tip.....................I once had a lady already start to punch my tip into the computer because she watched me write it!!!!

They say you should do percentage...and 15-20% is the norm - assuming the service was satisfactory.

I do feel that this depends on where you go. I usually go to a place where I get a cut/color and my total is around $150 - and I usually just do $20-25....so sometimes a little less than 15%....but they charge outrageous prices and I know they are getting a good cut of the price so I don't feel too bad.

Usally suggest they plant thier corn early or study hard in school....recently have suggested the they make hay when the sun shines!!!

Assuming they are actually doing the looking, quite rude of them. Are they providing a service you could be doing yourself and giving their time, energy and schooling to learn the skill likely worthy of some financial consideration? Assuming good service, yes...however, there's a difference between gracious acceptance of that gratuity and presumption.

Even more rude you have no problem expecting someone to bow down to you and do things within means of doing yourself, but don't think you should have to show any basic consideration for that person's willingness to put themselves into a subservient position after spending time to study and learn to perform that service. My tip to you: buy a bowl - works great for people to cut hair themselves.

It certainly seems you have lived the charmed life and not had to actually work for a living serving others.

Depends where you go. I use the 20% rule. However, if the place is running a special and they do a great job with a $10 haircut, why not tip $5? I always tip on pre-special prices.
