You seem to have already realized this, but just let me warn you to make certain that your new job provides health benefits. It can be very, very hard in the US to find someone to sell you a "private" (not employer provided) insurance policy, it is legal for an insurance company to refuse to sell to you because of a pre-existing medical condition, even one that's very minor, or long since resolved. Minnesota is really ahead of the pack, in terms of health initiatives, but it's still going to be very, very hard on you if you don't have employer-provided insurance. Another think to make certain of is that the benefits your job provides would be available to your wife as well--Some companies these days are dropping insurance for workers entirely, but others are keeping it for workers...And dropping covering workers spouses and children.

In terms of housing, another option might be to rent for a year or so, while you scope out the local housing market. You could probably find a one bedroom apartment for a pretty good price, definitely one affordable on a $45,000 salary.

oh boy, don't forget about the heat in the winter. If I remember correctly homes are constructed somewhat differently in Sweden so the heating costs are probably lower over there.

Keep in mind that a lower priced home 200-300k will usually sell faster if you decide to move later.
