Could someone explain to me where St. Anthony the neighborhood is and where St. Anthony the suburb are? I was at Silverwood park the other day and it was flat out beautiful, but I'm confused on whether I was in SA neighborhood or SA suburb.

I think I've heard both areas recommended before on threads here (although maybe I was confusing what was being talked about)...what is each area like, as far as cost, demographics, amenities, etc.

There are TWO St. Anthony neighborhoods, just to confuse things more! There's the St. Paul neighborhood, and then the area of Minneapolis by St. Anthony Falls.

In Minneapolis, there's the (official) neighborhood organizations, St. Anthony West and St. Anthony East: http://www.stawno.org/ and St. Anthony East Neighborhood Association | Where Hometown Meets Downtown. I think most people just lump those into "Northeast," but as someone who lived near there and had a "SE" in my address, I just have a hard time doing that. Could also be an age thing, as I don't remember people calling that portion of Minneapolis -- or at least the part right by the river, where Riverplace, etc. is located -- NE when I was growing up. (down there there's also St. Anthony Main, which is that stretch of buildings that includes the movie theater, etc., along the riverfront)
The St. Paul neighborhood is St. Anthony Park. It feels a bit like a St. Paul version of Linden Hills.
Saint Anthony Park

The park is in St. Anthony the city/suburb.

No idea about cost and demographics, but I'd assume that St. Anthony the suburb is the most affordable. St. Anthony Park in St. Paul is pretty upscale, and St. Anthony area in Minneapolis is fairly trendy and houses, anyway, cost quite a bit when you're that close to the river. Total guess here, but my assumption is that St. Anthony in St. Paul probably has the most kids, and St. Anthony the suburb probably has the most older people, as it's an aging inner-ring suburb (although probably has its share of new younger families moving in, too), and St. Anthony in NE Minneapolis has the most younger professionals. St. Anthony/NE is definitely the most trendy, St. Anthony the suburb the least so. All are nice areas (although it's been a long time since I've spent any time in St. Anthony the suburb), but in different ways. I've heard good things about the Silver Lake Village area (think it is all in St. Anthony the suburb) as a new-urbanist new development, but haven't had a chance to check it out for myself yet. I think St. Anthony the suburb probably doesn't get nearly the attention on this board as it probably deserves!

Ah, that's very helpful, thanks! (despite there now being 4 St. Anthony areas in my head now) It turns out I went for a run right past St Anthony West a few hours ago. Seemed like a cool area from the little I saw. I was surprised how quiet are area right near the heart of things can me.

UU is right, they're all nice. My only critique is I think she undersells St Anthony Village (as the suburb of St Anthony is known) just a bit.

I too like St Anthony Park in St Paul & I'd go so far as to call it a hidden gem of a neighborhood. I don't know it that well but I'd bet lot's of U of M professors & Professors from Luther Seminary live there & the lower end rentals are filled with Grad students or U of M Ag students. It'd be a great neighborhood to retire in the city, very quiet.

St Anthony Village is very nice as well, just as nice imo but different. St Anthony Village had the #1 school district in the state a couple years back & they're still a top-top school for Elementary & Junior High students, who then funnel into Mounds View I think? The wait list to get into these schools for non neighborhood residents is in the years I believe because as far as I can tell anyone in NE Mpls tries to get their kids into the St Anthony district? I really like the whole NE corner or NE Mpls, the Waite Park area, the Stinson Triangle area, moving E into St Anthony Village. Lot's of older residents, really nice though. I remember it being remarkably affordable as well. It'd be a great place to raise your kids in, but there's not much going on after night fall.

To further confuse things, there are actually two St Anthony Parks in St Paul: North St Anthony Pk and South St Anthony Pk. North SAP is the upscale, collegiate one that lies along Como Ave. and west of the U campus. South SAP is south of the railroad tracks and north of University Avenue. It's more of an old blue collar neighborhood, with industrial and trucking facilities mixed in. The residences are still very nice, we have friends there who live in a great old Victorian. It's just not as upscale a n'hood as North SAP.

Alright, now this is getting quite ridiculous. No wonder I was so confused.
