We are replacing our kitchen appliances with new ones and wondered what to do with the old ones.

They all still work, some more than others. I was thinking craigslist but wondered if there were any other programs out there? For instance in Illinois I believe there is a company that takes working refridgerators for $50.

Thanks

I'm not sure where you're located but in the city of Minneapolis you can dispose up to two "large items" per week. All you have to do is set it out by your garbage and put a sign on it that says "For Solid Waste." We've gotten rid of a washer and a fridge this way...very slick.

Also, if the appliances are less than 7 years old (I believe, you would need to confirm), Salvation Army will take them as a charitable contribution and deduction on your taxes. I think they will even send a truck for pickup.

The Salvation Army Northern Division: Serving Minnesota and North Dakota

I would imagine other charities will take appliances too.

Where I live on a main, relatively busy street, we often sit things on the berm, close to our driveway, w/ a large free sign. We have yet to fail to give away anything, except my baby spider plants, and those were hard to see.
I have had folks come up behind me as I am gardening, trying to hand me bills, I apppreciate that, but never take them. I get a secret bit of enjoyment knowing my gently used things are going to be appreciated. Big or small, we always get more out of giving than the recipient.
