I'm planning to take a day to drive somewhere. I'm not from MN and would like some ideas. Would like to take a hike or, see something new/different if possible. Currently in Twin Cities.

Drive to Duluth. It's beautiful, and it's also a whole other world from the Twin Cities.

Duluth.

When you say you're in the Twin Cities I assume you're in Minneapolis. The drive from Minneapolis to Duluth is about 2 hrs 15 mins. I've done it a bunch of times. Minneapolis, MN to Duluth, MN - Google Maps

It's an easy drive too. If you were to leave Minneapolis at 8 A.M, you would be in downtown Duluth by 10:30. You could hike in the parks in Duluth, noteably Chester Bowl/Park: http://www.duluthmn.gov/parks/pdf%20..._Trail_Map.pdf , Chester Park Trail , Enger Tower
Home - Enger Park Restoration Project , 7 Bridges Road Skyline Drive Duluth, Mn, Congdon Park Congdon Park Trail, http://www.duluthmn.gov/parks/pdf%20..._Trail_Map.pdf, Lester Park Lester Park Trail, http://www.duluthmn.gov/parks/pdf%20..._Trail_Map.pdf, Canal Park //www.city-data.com/picfilesc/picc2427.php, Park Point (7 mile peninsula) Minnesota Point - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia , the Duluth Boardwalk, Panoramio - Photo of Duluth Boardwalk , Dowtown Downtown Duluth Businesses and Tourism- The Greater Downtown Council, Eat Downtown - Duluth Restaurant Week - March 1 - March 15, 2012 ... And that's just in the actualy City of Duluth. Just a little north on historic highway 61 is Goosberry Falls, which is spectacular, Gooseberry Falls State Park - on Minnesota's North Shore of Lake Superior

Don't forget Betty's Pies Buy Pies Online From Betty's Pies, World Famous Homemade Pie Company & Pie Recipe Book - Two Harbors, MN (218) 834-3367 and Tobies' Famous Cinnamon Roll.
Tobies Restaurant & Bakery

To make it a true day trip you would have to get up at 5 am and get back at midnight to really take it all in -- the great views of Duluth, the Parks and Trails, the ships coming in, Canal Park experience, the Lift Bridge in action, Park Point Beaches, Dowtown Duluth, Gooseberry, all of it. But it can be done.

Some pictures I took:
