Anyone have a recommendation for a reasonably priced endodonist or dentist for a root canal on a molar? I don't have dental insurance but do have a discount card. I called the U already and their price was about the same that I got using the discount card.

We've used Dr. Kaufman at Metro Endodontics. Fantastic. I don't know how they compare pricewise to other endos though. Our regular dentist also does root canals if they are not complicated, Dr. Kurt Chroust in Rosemount. We have been very, very happy with both.

I'm surprised that the University of Minnesota dental school does not have discounts. I heard they did have low prices, where I think the students do the dental work or observe the instructors. Root canals can cost $1,000 - $1,200 the last time I've had one. Impants are much more expensive, about $5,000. Despite the bad reputation, root canals are not painful, neither are implants. I've had both.

The U had a discount but not enough. It was $50 less than a quote I got using my discount card, not enough to make it worth it to me.

Who did you see for the implant?

The U does give discounts but mostly on major work or odd work needed to train DDS's, etc. There is an application process you have to go through to be accepted and then the cost is very reasonable but for standard treatments, not so much. We looked into this a couple years ago when my dad needed some major work done. The cost was about 1/2 of what he would have paid elsewhere.

The U also use to have a discount if you paid at the time of the appt rather than having them bill you. Not sure if they still do it but it would be worth asking.

If you are in pain ground cloves works excellent for deadening the tooth and gums. Good luck with the root canal.

I went to the Health Partners Como Dental Specialist clinic. I've had one implant completed, and a second implant still needs a crown. It takes about a year to go through the process. It is important to have the extraction done by the dentist that will be doing the implant. One implant was done after two root canals failed. The other one an implant was the only permanent solution for the problem. Neither implant needed bone graphs and neither implant had complications. You need to determine if the tooth is a good candidate for an implant. Sometimes an implant isn't the best option, especially on the upper teeth because of the sinuses. You can have the implant done across two physical years to spread the cost between two years using pre-tax money.
