Hello all,

I am looking to move to MN from the East Coast very shortly. My wife will be working in St. Paul and I have a job in Mankato. We are looking to move to an equidistant town from these two locations, preferably close to some public transport. Any suggestions?

There will be no town between Mankato and St. Paul that will have public transportation to either place, sorry. You are talking very rural MN. That's going to be a tough commute for both of you. Maybe a town like New Prague and they catch the bus in Lakeville to St. Paul?? You won't find anything going to Mankato. Maybe look in Lakeville so you only have one person commuting? 90 miles apart in MN is a lot different then 90 miles apart on the east coast. You will be cursing your choices during the winter, sorry.

Agreed with the above....public transit is going to be a non-starter for either of you. GG is probably right that somewhere in the Lakeville, Prior Lake, or maybe even Shakopee would be the best area to look, as the drive in St. Paul wouldn't be super-long. The express buses from Lakeville go to Minneapolis in about 30-40 min, then you'd have to transfer and take another ~30 min to get over to St. Paul. Plus you would still have a 1hr+ drive to Mankato.

Yeah, equidistant really is not going to work as far as public transit goes. While there is transit to St. Paul, of course, it would require you to be well more than halfway there in order to take advantage of it (unless you are willing to drive a ways first).

I presume that you want your location the closest point that is equidistant from Mankato and St Paul otherwise your possibilities would be endless and you could in theory find a point off the Western coast of Austrailia or the middle of Africa that were equidistant.

I think you want this house just outside of New Prague...

1556 W 270th St, New Prague, MN 56071 (44.559355,-93.553498)

little bit closer to Mankato using roads, but if you are strictly looking at straight line distance, this would be the place as it is just a bit over 35 miles from both Mankato and St Paul

I don't think there is a town equidistant from St. Paul to Mankato that you could get to via public transport. You would have to:

1) Live in Mankato and your wife commutes to St. Paul
2) Live in St. Paul and you commute.

The only town halfway between St. Paul and Mankato is New Prague, and you would have to drive.

In addition, if you're willing to drive, I might also suggest Le Sueur.

I second Le Sueur or Shakopee area over New Prague just because the drive on 13 from 169 to 35 is not going to be fun during the winter on a 2 lane road. I drive to Mankato from St. Paul often and it can be an ok drive except when it snows a lot.

Ricockulous!

One (or both) of you will change jobs sooner than later, or you will eventually live apart.

I'm so sorry. :-(

While you figure it out though, I'd suggest somewhere in or near Chanhassan.

Upon sober review of my post just above, and some studying of the Google map, I think Ghengis has the correct answer.

I could be wrong, but I still don't think it will work long-term as a daily commute. It might work for a year or two if you decide it's worth it for some seriously good money or career opportunities, but it'll burn up a lot of gas, wear out two cars at a time, and I predict it will eventually wear out your patience and have you thinking about the next steps in life.
