I was thinking of applying to Augsburg because I had heard it was a good college. However on the radio this morning they had this girl who said she had applied to several colleges with no luck. The radio host then asked her if she had applied to Augsburg, he said that they take anyone who knows the alphabet. Basically they made it seem like it's not a good school.

It made me really nervous.

While its not the most prestigious school, it's not a bad school either. It really depends on what you want to major in and what kind of school you want.

Trust me, prestige doesn't matter unless you are going to an Ivy League school with substantive connections to high profile jobs. What you do to lay the foundation to use your degree and build a solid career is greater than going to a school with prestige and expecting the name of the school to open doors for you.

Of all the opinions to listen to regarding your college education, a random DJ host should not be on the list. Do your homework. Read reviews. Look at their acceptance rate, average SAT/ACT scores. Talk to students on campus. Go on a tour. Those are the things that should influence your decision.

No, it doesn't have a bad reputation. It doesn't have the prestige of the highly competitive local schools like Macalester or Carleton, but it's considered a perfectly solid liberal arts college. Whether it's a good school for YOU is going to depend on what want out of a school (and for many students, financial aid packages).

I have a good friend who graduated there. She got into the postgrad program she wanted. Then she got good jobs. Instead of fearing Augsburg, fear all those mills that advertise on TV.. Augsburg doesn't have to put actors on TV pretending to be students with a future.

It doesn't have a bad reputation as far as I am aware. It isn't in the same league as some of the other liberal arts colleges in the area. Primarily because those are among the best in the nation.

Augsburg is the private college that accepts people who can't otherwise get into private college. That is what I have heard, not sure if its true or not, but its the predominant stereotype.
