I am curious what is going on in my old home town of Minneapolis. I read that the Twin Cities and most of the other towns in Minnesota have some of the lowest unemployment rates in the United States.

How is this impacting small business owners who don't always get the response to help wanted advertisements that a large Fortune 500 Company would.

Is there labor shortages in Minnesota and are small businesses suffering because they can't find qualified and hard working employees?

I don't have any numbers to back this claim up, but it doesn't seem like there are labor shortages, more like a labor equilibrium.

Though different industries are naturally on different time scales, the labor shortage for most is "looming" or "impending" and not yet here.

If they can't find people, they need to improve the pay/benefits, find alternate ways to recruit workers, or lower their expectations for qualifications.

I agree that, in general, it seems like we have more of an equilibrium here than a shortage, although in some industries and in some locations it's probably a true shortage. I also think that the recession made some companies complacent in terms of hiring and retaining employees -- i.e., places that wouldn't have had trouble five or six years ago, when things were worse, haven't adjusted to the new reality yet.

It would be interesting to hear from employers or recruiters and have them describe their experience trying to hire talent vs. five years ago. Anyone?

Well, there's no shortage of employers that want to treat you like garbage and pay 10-12 dollars an hour, I can tell you that much.

One thing I must applaud MSP for is hiring people with disabilities. I have never, EVER been in a city with so many employees with visible disabilities. I just about fell over when I was helped by a blind woman in Home Depot.

I repeat. A blind woman at Home Depot.

Home Depot.

That's amazing.
