My son is making a temporary move to Minneapolis from May to September. As a 25 year old professional he'd like to live near others like himself - young professional, active lifestyle, bars and restaurants, etc.. He has a pretty hefty budget of $4000 per month for a furnished apartment. What part of town/neighborhood should he be looking at?

He should look in Uptown or the North Loop. I would prefer the latter myself.

Is $4000 just for rent or is it his whole monthly budget?

Fortunately for him the $4000 is the housing allowance.

I'll tell him to check out the Uptown and North Loop area.

He could get a really nice place for that budget! Yeah Uptown area is very popular with mid-20's and would be a good one to check out, it's nice to be near the lakes too in the summer which Uptown is. While North Loop is a great one to check out too and has some similar demographics and amenities and is adjacent to downtown and the Mississippi, I'd personally go with Uptown. Being close to the lakes in the summer really can't be beat in my opinion.

Is he here for work or school or something for which he needs to commute daily? If so, will be be driving, busing, taking light rail or bicycle commute (MPLS has fantastic bike trails and people take it seriously year-round, but he will be here at a wonderful time, weather-wise). And, if so, what hours for commuting?

What does he like to do? Hike, bike, museums, go to taprooms and breweries, go clubbing, sporting events, concerts?

Uptown and North Loop are really the only two places to look, with Uptown being better for someone in his age. Unless he wants a downtown place just for the high rise view, which is both close to Uptown and North Loop.

Thanks for the input; it's helpful. He has it narrowed down to these two areas and I think he's concentrating on Uptown.

There are some really nice new apartments and condos right across the river in St. Anthony Main and Northeast Minneapolis. If he likes craft beer and food trucks, that would be a good scene. St. Anthony Main isn't as residential as the rest of Northeast, but still close to downtown and the North Loop. He should at least take a look. Uptown isn't for everyone...

theres so many options all over minneapolis. new developments have sprung up all over. for 4k he can live like a boss anywhere in the twin cities. id recommend somewhere by lake calhoun or maybe off the mississippi there are alot of lofts. north loop too but its kind of dreary in my opinion.
