Short version:

DD was attending MCAD last year when they suddenly (covid) closed. DD had to stash her stuff in MCAD storage in a hurry. This year has been online only, so her stuff is still in storage. MCAD informed us we need to get her stuff out of storage (reasonable) by the end of term. So we are flying up there on 5/13.

Now, who knows how this trial will end. No matter what, I expect unrest. But we have no choice but to go or they will throw her stuff away.

Our trip will be dual purpose. 1 - get her stuff and rent an actual storage unit. 2 - look for apartments as on campus housing next year is not available for seniors.

As you can imagine, safety will be paramount. She will be living alone. She will have a car. At this point I don't care much about price. A studio or 1 br is fine. Garage parking. No rooms for rent. No sharing. No craigslist.

Please recommend a safe, short term storage facility (May- Aug) and a safe place for a 1 year lease.

Look on map at the northwest corner of Lake Bde Maka Ska (it'll always be Lake Calhoun to me) there’s expensive housing there and in the area to north and west. Money/wealth means they have security. It’s not a far drive to the school either. It’s also not as bad as people make it out to be, but still waiting on verdict as I’m writing this. If you want to rent outside of Mpls, look in nicer areas of Edina, 50th and France.

Storage facilities are popping up like dandelions around here. Should be able to secure one fairly easily.

For somewhat safe apartments where the DD would be comfortable and around other youth types, look at St Louis Park. Many buildings going up since Light Rail is coming in. Close to uptown/downtown and somewhat easy access to anywhere.

MCAD is in Whittier, which itself is not the safest as it's quite close to the crime-ridden hotspots of Philips and Powderhorn Park (where the riots began).

Have you considered somewhere in St. Paul? Mac-Groveland and Highland park are safe, mostly residential neighborhoods though it's mostly single family housing. Still, there are colleges in that area so students may rent there.

Thank you all for your input. I'm finalizing places to see. I've a short list right now but willing to hear more suggestions.

Well, wish me luck. We're off in a couple days. I've 5 places lined up for tours. I left Sunday open for visiting the Mall of America - something I always wanted to do.

4 tours down and 1 left tomorrow.

The mall was a bit disappointing. Big, but no really interesting stores.
