I'm going to be going on a weekend trip for labor day weekend and I'm trying to decide between two cities: Duluth or Madison Wisconsin. People I've talked to have raved about Duluth but I've read some things about Madison and it seems like a great place for a weekend getaway. So if anyone can give some information on these cities I'd appreciate it. Thanks

If you like outdoors and scenery, then Duluth area wins with zero contest.

If you're into water activities, the Wisconsin Dells is close to Madison. It really IS a big deal if you've got kids. I'm sure it would be a zoo on Labor Day though. There's a beautiful lake within the town. Other than that the city is all college and state politics buildings. I'm unsure of the nightlife there, but I would guess it's pretty good. For a fairly large city, it's a very nice place.

Duluth is much prettier country. The Northshore drive along Lake Superior is wonderful. It's a much more scenic area BY FAR than Madison. The largest fireworks display I've ever seen was over Lake Superior on the 4th of July. It was magnificent. Would be cool if they did it on Labor Day as well. Don't know.

I've been through Madison multiple times either going there or on the way to Chicago, but have only been to Duluth once for a vacation. We've made plans to go back there in August ourselves. Our passports are still updated, so we will also be crossing into Canada much like we did the last time we were there. The last time we were there, we didn't need passports. Times have changed.

I would vote for Duluth.

Going into Canada for Thunder Bay or more then that? My mom is from there so I’ve been traveling there my entire life, I wouldn’t really suggest it to anyone. It’s more of a run down Duluth. Kakabeka Falls is well worth seeing!

We drove to Thunder Bay the last time and probably will again this time. It was cool watching the big freighters being loaded. I also discovered at a McDonald's there that they put vinegar on french fries. I couldn't believe that the counter person asked me if I wanted vinegar. Yuck!! I also discovered that everyone up there actually does say "eh" all the time. It was like being in a segment of "The Great White North" comedy show.

I remember walking to the falls just off the highway. Very pretty.

Pretty cool seeing Moose Crossing signs instead of Deer Crossing signs like down our way. Didn't see any moose. They apparently didn't read the signs.

What is this all aboot eh? If you drink beer, here’s a challenge, drink everytime they say eh in the opening season of Strange Brew!! Lots of Timmy’s (Tim Horton’s) and Robin’s Donut's. The Keg is a nice chain Steakhouse up there. There’s almost actual mountains between border Thunder Bay.

Madison is great. But it really all depends on what you want to do. If its outdoors stuff, Duluth. If its markets/cafes/festivals, etc, Madison.

If you like theater, the American Players Theatre (outdoor ampitheater, shows in the summer and early fall) is just west of Madison. Great shows, beautiful grounds, art, meals, education (https://www.americanplayers.org/).

Why not skip both and go to Bayfield Wisconsin? Check out the Apostle Islands, madeline island and great hiking opportunities!
