My wife's car has seen better days and she is beginning to travel more frequently for work (driving mostly within the cities). First: is there a good website to go to begin looking for cars? Any thoughts on good ones? Or ones to stay away from? And then, what is a good car that gets good mileage. I can't afford a new one, but probably no more than $20,000. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Hi hoosier--Last time we bought used, I used carsoup dot com and cars dot com at the Start Tribune's website. Lots of choices on both, and its easy to sort and compare. To see what a reasonable price to pay is, go to edmunds dot com and look at the True Value feature. This site also has recomendations of which cars are best and worst.

Good luck.

yeah, I recently bought a car from online sources. The sites I mainly used were:

ebay.com
carsoup.com
autotrader.com
craigslist.org

The car I ended up with was actually an ebay auction that nobody bid on. I sent the seller a message saying I would give him $500 less than what the initial bid was just to see what would happen. He replied saying there is no way he could sell it for that much. I guess he got desperate after a while because he called me back a few weeks later saying he would sell it and now the car is mine

Well, it depends on a lot of factors

Do you know cars well, as in suspension and engines
Whats good gas millage
Do you want a smooth ride
Are you looking for safety above others

I'm planning on being a mechanic so i can help you with this type of deal
