I am a black professional looking to relocate from Toronto to Minneapolis-St Paul area. What suburb areas are safe (ie: from crime) Are people in M-St P
accepting of black people ?

What area is good for young professionals to live ? How is inter-racial dating viewed in that city and surrounding area ? I will be looking to buy within the $150 k to $200 k range. What neighbourhoods do you recommend ?

All the suburbs are safe. People in MN are very accepting and interracial dating isn't an issue.

Finding a single family home in your price range is going to be difficult though. Home prices are expensive here. Where is your job located? The Twin Cities area is pretty spread out and if you are working in Bloomington you probably don't want to live in Maple Grove, for example, because of the commute.

Vadnais Heights is a good area; I think all of the surrounding suburbs would be safe.

Housing will be very expensive in Vadnais and North Oaks; Little Canada may not be "the" choice suburb to live in; Roseville, Shoreview, and White Bear Lake may all have some 1950-style houses in the $200k range.

Eagan is a very nice suburb. The drive to Vandais Heights would be around 30 minutes or so depending on where you are in Eagan, it could be 45+ minutes. I would say that your best bet would be to look on the east side of the metro area. White Bear Lake, Mahtomedi (probably too expensive), Stillwater, Woodbury, most of Maplewood, are all great places to start. These areas would give you a commute of less then 15 minutes on most days. With the exception of a couple neighborhoods in Minneapolis and St. Paul proper you are going to be in a safe area. There is very little crime in the suburbs here.

You will be able easily find a townhome in any of these areas in your price range. You might be able to find a small home in some of these areas.

I agree with golfgal's post.

As far as commuting from Eagan to Vadnais with road construction projects for the next few years here in the Cities: it would drive anyone to drink! Don't Do it!

I don't know what the cost of living index is in Toronto but Minneapolis/St. Paul is MUCH less expensive then NYC. You can find a nice 3 bedroom townhouse for rent in the suburbs for $1500/month or less. From what I have heard you can't get an efficiency apartment for that in NYC.

I really have no clue what the cost of living here is like in comparison to those two cities.
