As a 35 year resident of Marshall, I have to agree with most of what stayaway has said. However, I've been drinking the water for 35 years and it doesn't bother me. Maybe it's an acquired taste. Also, I think any agricultural area will be tough on people with asthma or allergies. It's even hard on my dog at this time of the year.

Yep, stores come and go. Marshall residents don't seem to like to shop in Marshall so it's a tough town to get a business off the ground. Not only that but local residents really like to squeeze their pennies. But due to online books, the numbers of book stores are on the downswing all over.

It's certainly cold here today - -14 wind chill. I doubt we are unique for that.

Public affection? Get a room.

I was informed about the cliquishness of Marshall when I first moved here. That doesn't bother me. I prefer to avoid people. However, my wife has plenty of friends so it's not like you can't meet people and socialize if that's your thing.

Isn't it pretty common for liquor stores to be owned by the city? Doesn't bother me as I don't drink.

Fun? My local enjoyment comes from my backyard bird feeders.

I really don't know what there is to like in SW MN period.

I don't recall ever visiting Marshall when I was growing up in Minnesota. Regardless of whether one likes the town or not, you have to admit not too many towns that small have an employer as large as Schwan's or a four year state college (SW MN State). Too bad it is not closer to the Twin Cities or Mankato like St. Peter.

We really enjoyed living in Marshall. We found plenty to keep us busy. Not only do they have Schwan's but they have a large US Bank division, Reinhart Foods employs a lot of people, the college, the hospital, etc. There is a very active arts council that brings in plays, musical groups (orchestras and others), etc. The high school and college has numerous performances of all types, etc.

That is very impressive for a small Minnesota town near the SD border. Marshall has several things to be proud of and the naysayers should be ignored. I can't imagine a commute being more than five minutes there except maybe in winter on occasion. Cost of living must be low.

Schwan's recently posted a want ad in my area for a customer service rep. So they do have national influence. I have never heard of Reinhart Foods, the US Bank division or the cultural activities (outside of SW MN State), but those are plusses, too.

It may not be for everyone, but it is certainly understandable why couples and families would consider it.
