"chasing a dream”
For many years I’ve been chasing a dream I just can’t seem to catch.
Reminds me of a puppy, just learning to play fetch.
He runs after the stick as it flies through the air.
Landing in a tree, he just can’t reach it there.

Everything I’ve always wanted, also seems just out of reach.
It’s not like I’m asking for a condo on the beach.
Just a place to raise my family, maybe grow a crop or two.
I don’t care if I ever get rich; it’s just something I want to do.

A small farm in Minnesota and a tractor to till the land.
I’m not afraid of hard work; I’d do it all by hand.
A couple of Peterbilt trucks parked out by the barn.
With a couple happy drivers proud to work for Tatro Trucking and Farms.
A place where I can have a shop and spend a lot of time working with my son.
And my wife comes out and says, ‘hey boys, suppers almost done’.

Where I can run through the fields, playing with my girls.
This I would like to have, more than anything in the world.
I don’t understand, why it has to be so tough.
It’s been right there at my finger tips.
My arms just weren't long enough.

I hope you have lots of money. Tillable farm land is going for about $6,500 an acre in SW Minnesota. Corn and soybeans is the name of the game around here. You can run around a corn field, but you will end up full of cuts and pesticides

I've long wondered about the complete dominance of corn and soybeans in MN agriculture. Doesn't the constant planting of those crops waste the soil's vitality? Why not plant more varieties of vegetables?

Farming is an incredibly difficult business. First off, it's not like planting a backyard garden. You really, really have to understand agriculture... when and how to plant, animal husbandry....a whole host of things. An ag degree is a start. Then, you have to have the stomach to take huge risks. Whatever you plant could be lost to weather or a disease any year at any time. Finally, it is a very dangerous occupation. Take a look at the injury and fatality stats. There you are out on the farm with all this heavy equipment, basically alone and miles away from emergency help. I have family members who farm and it is not a job for the average joe.
