I would be surprised if the state college system is deemed "unessential".

At this point I wouldnt worry.

I haven't heard a peep about universities shuttering. I do know that even during the last shutdown, many services kept running and once a budget was passed, the services that kept running were sort of grandfathered into the budget to cover the expenses while the rest of the state was shut down.

I would guess the state shutdown will last a few hours, until the first major highway traffic accident - with no State Trooper presence, but 4 or 5 news trucks on hand. Then, money will start flowing again.

Dayton is advocating that essential services stay open, should a shutdown occur. The Strib wrote about it. You can read it here.

or until they have no money to pay themselves. I suspect that would be an essential service though.

Try not to fret much, this has become the new way to pretend to stand tough and look like a hero in an 11th hour agreement. I don't think they even feel obligated to make a serious attempt to agree until it gets close.

The State Colleges are considered essential and aren't shutting down. There is an blurb in the Trib and on the various state U websites.

This state shutdown will be drastically different and much more far-reaching than the 2005 shutdown- it's a very different situation, and legislators had accomplished much more pre-shutdown in 2005 than what's been accomplished during session thus far this year. A shutdown is highly likely and right now there is no telling how long it will last, but I am very worried about its potential length/broader impact (especially considering that, even though I work for a private non-profit, the shutdown will have such a big impact on our government-funded areas/services that we have no choice but to implement a number of furloughs, myself likely included, not to mention some other drastic measures).

So, I think a bigger concern than the college scenario (which is safe), for me anyways, is whether or not the unemployment system will make it through as an "essential service"....

For those legislators involved in negotiating the budget, the secret word is COMPROMISE. Elimintate the proposed tax cuts and any proposal for additional spending/services and get that damn budget balanced already! As I've said all along, if they still can't get it balanced after that then start going with the unconventional ways to raise money...decriminalize victimless crimes and start wheeling the dough in for regulated sin taxes!
