Minnesota isn't a state known for its college towns, but we have quite a few cities centers around universities. Excluding Minneapolis and St Paul, which MN city do you think offers the best in university atmosphere, diversity, academic excellence, cultural attractions and employment opportunities?

I don't think it necessarily best meets all the items laid out in your list, but Northfield is my favorite college town in Minnesota.

Minneapolis. Can you beat it? Lakes, beaches, women, bars, restaurants, entertainment....you name it. All you have to do is commute to the U of M (or Augsburg, or wherever), because living on campus kinda sucks compared to the creme de la creme university cities in the country (I went to Ohio State, and it has a better on-campus vibe than the U of M). Commuter schools aren't my favorite but if you don't mind, Minneapolis and the U of M for example would be one of the tops in the country for me (NYU, Temple, Harvard or Boston College or MIT, DePaul, Northwestern, etc. also make the cut).

The OP said "excluding Minneapolis." I know what you mean, but MPLS really isn't a college town. Neither is Duluth, which is why it isn't on this thread. Personally, I would rather attend college in a large city and live in a college town, but maybe that's because I've spent much of my life living in a college town.

Oh, by the way, Go Blue. I hop you like the sanctions coming OSUs way in a few weeks.

I don't actually. But "Blue" has sucked OSU's proverbial rooster in the past decade and free tattoos had NOTHING to do with it. "Justify MY love" - Janet Jackson.

Northfield or St Cloud. I voted for St Cloud because of my Husky bias.

Someone has to like Marshall, right? It's a great town, it just doesn't have much "college atmosphere" (but it's getting a lot better in that department).

Minnesota doesn't have anything like State College, Austin, Madison, Lawrence, etc. I don't consider MSP to be "college towns".

I just took the little lady through Northfield yesterday. She was impressed!
