I was able to spend a some time in Red Wing one afternoon/early evening during my trip to MN seven years ago (Oct 2005). The view from the Barn Bluff Hill was very nice. Overall, the town has less to do than Stillwater, but is also less crowded. It is a picturesque setting. From what I saw, nightlife is limited to a couple of sports bars, but I may be mistaken. Pleasant place.

I like it, too. I've driven down there just to enjoy the town. Saw a nice musical concert at their little live theater. Ate at places down by the river. Neatest short drive from the Metro. Much better (in my opinion) than Stillwater.

The hike around/up Barn Bluff is outstanding, especially for a city park!

I like the atmosphere in Red Wing better than Stillwater. I lived in Stillwater before it got "discovered". I consider it degraded by that. My mother lived there because she was a teacher in the school district. I'm sure that people like her are outnumbered by those who work in bigger suburbs or St Paul.

Red Wing is also headquarters of the famous shoe company of the same name. I am sure that is also a source of civic pride and those stores are in most states I'm sure (including here). They are also well known for their pottery makers, too. The atmosphere does also seem more laid back than Stillwater as you said.
