Man that fire up there is a monster! Six fire fighters had to use their fire shelter to escape the fire as it overcame them, not since 1918 has there been a worse fire here in Minnesota, it made the NBC National News for the second night in a row with Brian Williams. The fire progression maps are incredible how fast the fire has surged still not controlled.

From what I understand, the fire has affected about 100,000 acres (10%) of the BWCA and has not (yet) reached the 1999 blowdown area where only 15% of the 400,000 some acres of the BWCA downed trees have been removed. It was only a matter of time until that area burned and if the new fire reaches that part of the wilderness...you ain't seen nuthin' yet.

Yeah whats so intresting is reading some trip reports on canoe trippers one group was forced to leave just in time from South Temperance Lake which is about 11 miles straight north of the Baker Lake EP, and they took lots of photgraphs as they were canoeing away and the entire area was showing flames all around them.

I think the closed off area's are from the Gunflint Trail all the way over west until the Lake One Gaberal Lake area, Snowbank Lake area this includes the Sawbill Landing area Im sure.

Duluth has not seen any smoke yet though, so intresting

The winds were favorable and smoked out Wisconsin instead . Actually, it was/is really bad, people have been told to stay inside as far south as Chicago. Visibility in some areas is down to 1/2 mile because of the smoke.

I know! I haven't seen or noticed any smoke from the fires here in downtown Duluth. But watching WGN News out of Chicago on cable, they are seeing a lot of smoke from the fire - it must be the system across Lake Superior over to Lake Michigan. Odd that Duluth is about 165 miles south of the fire, yet Chicago, a good 500 miles further, is more affected by the fires than we are! The good news is that northern Minnesota is experiencing a cooler, wetter month and hopefully that will give the firefighters a little breathing room (as seen in today's Duluth News-Tribune).
