Though, curiously, the namesake book was set in Kansas, while another Laura Ingalls Wilder book -- On The Banks of Plum Creek -- was set near Walnut Grove. The title of the TV series must've focus-grouped better than the other possible title. Minnesota did pretty well for itself on TV in the 1970s for a flyover state with maybe 2% of the national population -- two of the most acclaimed and popular series of the decade, one a sitcom and one a drama.

Then there are Minnesota novels, I guess the most famous of which would probably be Main Street by Sinclair Lewis.
Sorry to correct you. The namesake book was set outside of DeSmet South Dakota. The Ingalls later moved to Walnut Grove Minnesota approximately 200 miles from DeSmet. A pageant is held yearly at DeSmet to commemorate the Little House saga.

A lesser-known movie shot in Minneapolis (the film's setting is never specified) is Factotum. It provides some interesting cityscapes, including some of the more obscure parts of town. A nice bonus is the fact that it's shot in the summer.

The book Little House on the Prairie is set in and around the town of Independence, Kansas.

The book set in De Smet, South Dakota, is By the Shores of the Silver Lake.

I did notice that. It was very brief, so I was not sure what the showed. Perhaps it was in Bloomington. I saw one of the buildings in a previous scene and I am pretty sure it was one that GE Capital had for years near 35W & 494. Might have been the case that they were not going to go to the extra expense to film at another location.

One thing I did notice in another scene was the 36 bridge in Stillwater when they where trying to leave the state.
