How much of the tourists that go to mall of america are from the midwest.Like how much of the 40 million per year are from the midwest (census defined midwest). How much of those 'tourists' are also locals? I can't imagine mall of america being near the level of las vegas or new york or disney world or san francisco for tourists. I know disney world takes in a lot of northeast tourists,i am sure that the percent of northeasteners that go to disney world out of the total tourist amount is at least 10-20 percent higher than the percent of northeasteners that go to mall of america. Almost every one i know went to disney world (i am from new jersey) i can't think of anyone i grew up with in new jersey that ever went to minnesota on a tourist trip. I mean i am sure a lot of those tourists in mall of america are from chicagoland ,or same day ones or some international tourists who didn't come to america to visit Minnesota.

I'm sure specific tourism data is available for Mall of America but I haven't run across it. In my own personal experience, it seems like the majority of people at the mall on any given day are locals, or at least from the midwest visiting for the weekend. I was recently in New York and at times it felt like I had to search hard to find a New Yorker because it was completely flooded with toursists...it is like night and day compared to hear from a tourism standpoint. This isn't to say that the Mall of America and the Twin Cities in general doesn't have any tourism, just far far less than New York, DC, Vegas, LA, Chicago, Orlando, San Fran, etc.

The MOA is similar to Disney in that there are a lot of people from the area that go there, just like there are a lot of people from Florida that visit Disney frequently, or a lot of people from NY and NJ that visit NYC, etc. During the summer months and various vacation times during the year, I would say that most people at the MOA are tourists. For whatever reason, it's a popular place for people from Japan to visit.

I suspect most people not within driving range will either (a) have rental cars or (b) will have taken the light rail to the mall.

Default truth

80 Percent of NON minnesota residents come from Dakotas/Iowa/Wisconsin/Illinois/Canada according to the offical tourism website. I wonder,if we combine the minnesota residents with residents of the dakotas/iowa/wisconsin /Illinois and Canada what that number would look like. And the only foreigners that come to Minnesota on vacation are ones seeing the whole u.s. Not one person from outside north america ever planned a vacation to america just to see a mall with a theme park. Florida has tons of theme parks, warm weather, beaches, NYC has history, broadway, beaches, etc . The theme park there isn't even as good as six flags. I mean disney theme parks are unique. Mall of america is not

About 7% of the 40 million tourists visiting the MOA are from overseas, and over half of them are from Asia. I remember reading that the Japan Travel Buerau was flying in a 747 a day for its Minnesota golfing and shopping package, featuring local golf courses for the men, and buses to the MOA for their wives. In other words, they come just to Minnesota, notmon a tour of the entire US. Minnesota has a higher international profile than people here think. I wonder how many folks commenting here on the makeup of MN visitors have themselves been outside the US?
mall of america, china, outbound, travel, tourism, promotion, marketing, delta airlines
