Having held many positions (including management-level) for 25+years in Minnesota, I was surprised to learn that Minnesota employees are the least engaged workers in the U.S. according to the most recent State of the American Workplace poll (link below). What do you make of this? Are you surprised that Minnesota is #1 in disengagement? Let's discuss!

See Page 14---where it states that our state is the least engaged.

I have seen some of the disengagement---but was surprised Minnesotans are rank #1. What a complete myth then about the midwest work ethic! Perhaps we once had it and lost it? If we once had it, what caused the big shift?

I'm my trade I've worked with people from all over the country and I'll take Minnesotans (and other Midwesterners) over southerners or far westerners any day. IME the best work ethic is in the Midwest and Northeast and I don't give a damn what an organization serving the interests of Big Business thinks. No doubt they think engagement means being a rubber backed, head nodding, knee scraping, hat in hand lickspittle willing to work for peanuts, very common among southern workers.

The most engaged state, Louisiana....really???? Maybe it's because they are just happy to have a job. Perhaps people in MN expect more from their jobs/employers....or don't get caught up in all the fancy buzzwords and just do their jobs.

A lot of those "low engagement" states have pretty low unemployment rates....

I think the survey and the articles we've seen touting the results are a bit off.

As explained on MPR, while we have the highest amount of "not engaged" workers, the survey did not measure just "engaged" or "not engaged". There is a third category that is "actively disengaged".

So really it means that while we're doing our work, we're not necessarily "inspired" or anything of that sort. But we aren't miserable and out to actively sabotage our boss.

Sounds to me like the survey is picking up a lot of Midwest modesty.
