I'm planning on moving to Balaton. I googled it and a grocery store closed down. Is it that small of a town and not much going on? Is it a good place to raise kids? I live in Minneapolis. I'm used to a lot resources and stores near me, but hate the crime.

I've driven highway 14 many times from New Ulm to Brookings and I used to live not far from there when I was a kid. It was mostly dying towns then. Don't imagine anything is looking up since then. If you are indeed used to lots of "resources" being around you, a town that size would be an abrupt change to say the least.

Talk about small town Minnesota. Why would a family want to move there? At least it's only a 20 minute drive to Marshall, which is the largest town you'll find in this area. There is a small lake on the edge of town but other than that, I think life would get boring fast in Balaton. Also, anytime you need groceries or hardware or practically anything, you'll need to drive to Marshall to get it and some winters, both county road heading towards Marshall can be pretty dicey.

Balaton is SO small! What made you specifically pick this town as one you actually PLAN to move to? Especially without apparent knowledge of the town.

I only have one reason. To be closer to my kids and see them again

Can't blame you. That trumps everything.

Sad truth is that the closest town of any size is Marshall. Most boring city of it's size I've ever had the unfortunate necessity to have to go to for business.

If you and your kids have no problem driving a little, I'd consider Pipestone over Balaton. It's less than half the size of Marshall, but has all the things you need unlike Balaton. PLUS, it's a reasonable driving distance to Sioux Falls.

That's pretty harsh. Problem is, I can see your point.

Hi Jenny979,

I tried writing you back, but it said that I exceed my direct message limit. I don't understand why because I've only written 2, and they were in response to you.
