The metro tv anchors ( and nightly world news anchors) both stated that it could be a cold winter, but the good news is the heating costs have dropped.

I filled today with furnace oil ( a popular fuel in rural Minnesota) and paid ------$2.09

------$2.95 in October of last year.

However, I paid $1.95 December of last year

----------------$1.79 end of January 09
----------------$1.49 mid march of last year
(all those prices were cash prices and using the same fuel company )

Those fuel price drops were amazing last year and unless it repears itself ( highly unlikely) fuel bills for this season will be a whole lot higher.

And yet the " talking heads" from the metro and national news try to " spin" and convince you otherwise.

my post wasn't about the cold, but about the heating costs dropping.

Good, I think I'll raise my house's temperature from 68 degrees to 69 degrees this winter to celebrate the lower cost.

And a cold fall, spring, and summer to boot. I enjoyed our week of summer in August though!

We will also see snow showers next week in NH. The northern tier is cooling of fast with this current weather pattern.

They many be talking about natural gas, something which is very common for furnaces in the Twin Cities, and which has dropped in price quite a bit in the past year. It's a pretty common heating fuel in the Atlanta metro, too. And yes, we do need it ... it'll get into the teens a few times a year down here.

Ya, media distortion again at its finest. Watch the price of a barrel of oil. It is now at $72. Heating fuel is trading at under $1.75 a gallon with natural gas trading at about $4.75 per thousand BTUs.

I heard this on WCCO radio and they were specifically talking about Natural Gas and Propane. They didn't say anything about oil. We are holding off turning on our furnace-I just can't do that in early October. I remember one year not turning our our furnace until Thanksgiving. We usually can hold off until November. We have been using our gas fireplace for a little bit in the mornings. As long as the sun comes out we are ok without the furnace for a while.
