The Mississippi coast has mild winters. You could say they feel like spring to people up North. The climate is humid year round. Gulport is defintely not as large or wealthy as the DC area. There is a Vietnamese community in Biloxi.

There is no comparison between the two. DC is much wealthier. However, the Coast has its charms. Average daily highs in winter are 60 degrees and in spring, summer and fall the ocean breezes near the beach are wonderful. Downtown Ocean Springs has the walkable community with unique restaurants and shops. Pass Christian is lined with seaside mansions and a picturesque marina. Bay St. Louis is artsy and has a perfect spot overlooking the bay. Diamondhead is a pleasant golf course community.

I lived in the Gulfport area for 6 years. The backwards mentality, horrific school systems (crime/education standards), filth, heat, confederate flag gun toting fools and hurricanes grow old quick. Don't trust the marketing schemes, Gulport/Biloxi is a filthy area, families have to travel to see something nice. Also, Gulport/Biloxi beach, its knee high water!...no tide!...only tourist get in the water.

Crime, is nothing new to me. Having lived here in D.C. Metro Area for so long, you sort of get used to that. But no good school systems. heat and humidity and dirty areas

Are there absolutely no good areas at all??? I can deal with Country, I lived in meridian for a year. But are there anything positive out in Gulfport/Biloxi/Pascagoula area????

Gulfport from a former resident
Don't listen to them. I lived in Gulfport for over 40 yrs and it was a pretty safe place. Sure like any town there are bad places but not all if the coast is bad. I lived in the northern area of Gulfport all of my life and went to school there. In fact I lived across the street from a section 8 apartment complex and never had any problems with crime.
Now it will not be like living in Washington D.C. It doesn't have all of the cultural aspects of really big cities but there is always something going on. Plus, New Orleans is only 1 to 1 1/2 hrs away.
There are two fairly big military bases there so there are people from all over on the coast. There is a big Hispanic and Vietnamese population on the coast. Some consider the south as racist and "rednecks".
Yes there are some bigoted, narrow minded people but they are not the majority of people there.
The education is lacking in some areas. There are many good private schools on the coast.
If you chose to only see the negative in people and places then you will be miserable. Yes there are some things that need improving but there are also lots of good things about the coast.
If you like warm weather, then you will love the area. It does get pretty hot and humid in the summer and it tends to rain quite a bit.
I moved further north because my husband is going to school and found a job here in Missouri. My family still lives there and MS will always be my home. I think that people who hate it there choose to hate it and don't want to give the area a chance. Plus if they think the whole area is backwoods rednecks, then they are hanging out in the wrong area and with the wrong people. We are not all like that!
If you visit the area and try to keep an open mind, I think you will find that it is really not a bad place to live.
Just my two cents...
The area is not as filthy as the other poster claims it is. Yes there are some areas that need work but there are some beautiful areas in Long Beach, Pass Christian, Bay St. Louis etc. Besides there are a lot of big urban cities that are way dirtier than the Gulf Coast.

I did a lot of research and even actually found a few areas and apartment complexes that had me exciting going there. Unfortunately, my husband found out the other day he did not get the job. So at least for now, gulfport is closed down. Thanks again everyone for chipping in and giving me all this info. I really do appreciate it, both pros and cons. Maybe there will be a vacation planed for gulfport instead one day.
Now we are awaiting job news from meridian,MS. and Norfolk,VA. Kind of interesting in a way to see where our lives will take us

I think both Washington AND the Gulf have the advantage of being by deep-water fishing. I was really surprised though. I have my mouth all set for great seafood and have yet to find a decent restaurant. What happened to all of the great Ma-&-Pa Seafood restaurants I've heard that the Gulf Coast is famous for. I could always go to one of the Casinos but who wants deep-fried Cod flown in frozen from New York? What no Grouper??

Half Shell Oyster House in Biloxi is great. Also Mary Mahoneys in Biloxi is famous. The marinas in Long Beach and Pass Christian have great restaurants overlooking the water. Downtown Ocean Springs is full of restaurants. Downtown Bay St Louis has several cool restaurants also. Also several in downtown Gulfport.
