Yup. Lotta people don't know that about southern Illinois and Indiana. Those people are just as southern as you and me. Ohio, too, if you're close to Kentucky.

Seems like the Kentucky border musta "leaked" at some point.

sweet tea is always on the menu
southern accents are thick
life moves a little slower
college football is king
people still go to church on sundays
yall is heard often, as is Yes ma'am and No Sir

So that is the litmus test to determine if a region is southern enough to be "real"?

I dislike these kinds of statements, as they only seem intended to divide people. Makes no sense to me.

If a state wasn't part of the Confederacy, it's not Southern. Country maybe, but never Southern.

Does this make Oklahoma and Kentucky southern? I've always been under the impression that they were.

Kentucky was part of the Confederacy on paper, and physically part of it for a few months in 1862/3.

Oklahoma, back then was a collection of Indian Nations, all sided with the Confederacy in official capacity but had internal divisions with Unionists within.

But either way, you have a good point sir.

My husband and I are retired in N Nevada, lived most of our lives in N California. I am on oxygen but can go and do most things.. wanted to know things like...temp--Humidity, is it harder to breath there than here? Have had people talk about dying of heat and not being able to breath it is so muggy..Tornados scare the heck out of me. Any help would be helpful. Thanks

"temp" - most summer days 90-95

"Humidity" - high

"is it harder to breath there than here?" - Yes

"Have had people talk about dying of heat and not being able to breath it is so muggy" Yes, epically if not acclimated.

"Tornados scare the heck out of me" - they a possibility throughout the South and Midwest, but most people don't dwell on the thought.

Also, many people complain of pollen and other breathing irritants.

As long as you are not out in the heat of the day and don't over do it, you will likely be fine. Many native Mississippians are obese with mobility problems and seem to get along well.

The humidity can be stifling in Mississippi. However, you said you're on oxygen and live in northern Nevada. I don't know exactly where you live, but I would think your elevation must be at least 4000 feet or higher?
You would certainly have more oxygen in the air you would breathe in Mississippi.

I live at an elevation of 6100+ feet in New Mexico. I run or bicycle almost daily. When I go back to Mississippi to visit friends, I run and bicycle faster. That lower-elevation, high-octane air is like desert to me. Although, I will admit, running in the high humidity is pretty dang yucky.

I found growing up in the North then moving to the South. It's only really southerners who concern themselves about this. I'm enjoying my time in the south. Great people

Most Mississippians at the founding of the state moved from North Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, and Tennessee. At least that's what I've heard.

There is actually traces of diversity of cultures within Mississippi. The Gulf Coast is heavily Catholic, with Catholic schools and churches in every town. I would assume that's from Irish immigrants in the 1800s, along with some Italians and Germans. There are also lots of beautifully quaint Episcopal churches in almost every town which I assume represented the upper class immigrants from England. The Coast is known for being casual and fun loving.

The Delta as well as river cities Vicksburg and Natchez are also said to have their own unique cultural traits, akin to New Orleans just down the river. In the old days, when interior Mississippi leaned towards being tee-totalers (no alcohol based on religious traditions), the port cities of the Coast, Natchez, Vicksburg, the Delta, and Columbus were more known, at least among the wealthy I would assume, for a society based on endless parties. My grandparents for their entire adult lives went to a party at least 2 to 3 nights a week.

The far northeast Mississippi counties were known to have a culture more like Tennessee and Alabama.

There are small things that stand out, such as how most college football fans are casual, except in the Deep South where people dress up for the games and go to pre-game tailgate parties bringing 'grandmother's best china and chandelier"

With all that said though, I think these days Mississippians are far more interested in all the new jobs coming in from Toyota, CSprire, GE, etc...and enjoying a long weekend at a coastal casino, complete with pool, spa, and lots of food and drink.
