I thank each of you for your valued input. It was nice to get feedback from folks local to the area as well as an “outsider” like myself. I found it helpful, insightful and some of it a bit disturbing!
We are very much looking forward to the opportunity to live in Mississippi. Even though I’ve lived in anumber of places due to my military service, my spouse has not. We are considering this an adventure.
By the way, Viverlibre, it isn’t my husband who will have an office in Columbus. We are moving because of an opportunity I’ve received. I’m pretty much open to living anywhere even with a bit of a drive. We just want a place we will feel welcomed and we can call home.

While you are moving to the area, remember that Tupelo is an hour or so North of you. Tupelo always has something going on; last week we went to see Bill Cosby. We've seen Marty Stuart, Little Richard, and there are car shows, Elvis week, street fairs, and so forth. Probably a little far for you to live, but worth a weekend visit.

I totally missed the whole Shriner vs. Shiner thing. My husband laughed and filled me in. I had to re-read it! Thanks again to everyone. The move and experience will be fun and an adventure!!!!

Default Starkville is the best

I recommend Starkville because it has the highest quality of life in the region. Starkville offers Mississippi State University with 20,000 students and several thousand faculty and staff. The university brings a diverse population from around the U.S.A. and the world to Starkville. Starkville has the better public schools-better than Columbus and West Point. Many children of university employees attend Starkville Public Schools (I attended SPS). Two private schools are also available in Starkville.
The best residential area in Starkville is South Montgomery Street, however there are other smaller neighborhoods that are good also (Old West Point Road). You can find most shopping needs at Walmart, Lowe's, J.C. Penney, Sports Center, and Kroger. Starkville also has many nice boutique stores in the downtown area selling clothing, home decor, and gift items. MSU offers many sporting events including football, basketball, and baseball throughout the year. A major arts festival is held every April called Cotton District Arts Festival. MSU and the city offers performing arts events. Many churches in Starkville including Baptist, Methodist, Catholic, and many more.
Many restaurants are in town including delis, coffee shops, grill restaurants, Mexican, Italian, Japanese, Thai, and barbecue. Most of these are located on or near Main Street or Highway 12.
OCH is a good hospital that offers most services. If they don't offer something they will refer you to another hospital within 30-60 miles. You won't have to go farther than that unless you need brain surgery or some complex procedure.
MSU has the only public golf course in the region that is full 18 course. Starkville Country club offers a golf course also. The Starkville Sportsplex is a nice facility that offers baseball and soccer fields and a large indoor basketball court. The Mississippi Horsepark offers rodeos throughout the year. Listen to MSU football coach Dan Mullen about Starkville- "an unbelievable quality of life."
