The 2001 Flag Referendum was a disaster, the alternative didn't stand a chance, it had no meaning to anyone.

If a vote was taken today, would you vote for a flag similar to the one on the link (the state flag from 1861 to the late 1800s) over the current flag? If you vote, please indicate if you normally vote republican or democrat.

I'd vote for the flag in the link.

I would vote for it if I lived there. And as I intend to move back home eventually, it is quite possible that I *will* vote for it.

The image is part of an article from 2012, here: Ask Rufus: Mississippi's Lone Star Flag - The Dispatch

Ironically, the design at the link has more historic references to the confederacy than the current flag... because it WAS the official flag of Mississippi during the confederacy. Some versions also include a thin vertical red bar on the right edge, but either way that flag flew from 1861 until 1894 when it was replaced by the current flag.

I'd say the flag shown does an excellent job of representing Mississippi, without the KKK and Jim Crow connotations of the current flag.

If you put a referendum today the results would be the same.

Likely, but at least this alternative has some meaning and history, with a little style.

I'm gonna be honest and say, as a long time MS resident, I really dislike the flag. I love the one in the OP's link. It fits us better. We need to ditch the whole "confederate" stuff and look forward. Mississippi is progressing, from South Mississippi boosting in economy(Biloxi, and D'Iberville), to northern MS looking more and more like it wasn't even in Mississippi at all.

Sure the flag linked has more linkage with the confederate history, but it doesn't flaunt it at all. It's simple, and nice. We definitely need a new flag, and I'd definitely vote for that one if it was a choice between that and the current.
