Hi, thinking about settling down in Mississippi, small house just for myself. 57 years old male. Ocean Springs looks nice to me, but worry about homeowners insurance being high due to being close to gulf.Or should I look little inland for house. Thanks for any input!

Ocean Springs is great and there are many small homes. You would just have to check prices. It's a lovely town by any measure.

For more rural areas north of I-10, if you want countryside/space and lower insurance, Vancleave, North Woolmarket, and Saucier are options.

Further down the coast, Long Beach and Bay St. Louis are similar to Ocean Springs. Diamondhead has newer homes but is still quite affordable on the whole.

For tiny towns 30 miles north of the coast (for low cost and very rural atmosphere), try Lucedale and Wiggins. For a larger small-town convenient to both Bay St. Louis and New Orleans, there is Picayune and adjacent Carriere.

For being in the middle of town with an affordable suburban setting, try North Biloxi (Popp's Ferry Rd just south of I-10) or D'Iberville. The interchange of I-10 and I-110 in D'Iberville is a hub of new shopping (e.g. Target, Walgreens, Best Buy, movie theatre), so being within a few minutes of that area is convenient.

The Tradition area may be too pricey but it's well north of the Hurricane insurance zone and has houses of all sizes including very small houses.

The Coast truly is a collection of separate towns all in a row, and as a result there are comparable options all up and down the coast that are all quite similar, are generally safe, and are often fairly small and modest in size. Home prices though as not as cheap as they used to be. It all depends on your budget.

If you currently have homeowners insurance, I'd just call the Ocean Springs office of your insurance company. Tell them you're a current customer thinking of relocating and you're checking to see how the costs compare.
