EarlVanDorn: What did you decide on for your kids? Are you going with DeSoto Central (public) or SBEC (private)? My husband & I are in the same boat trying to figure out where to live in DeSoto County based on the schools. I've been leaning toward SBEC, but we still have a couple of years before we have to decide (our daughter is only 21 months old and couldn't start the pre-K3 program at SBEC until Fall of 2012...we toured SBEC and loved it).

We actually decided on Oxford! DeSoto County was just too big for us. In Oxford, I will feel comfortable with my children having the roam of the town. Not so in DeSoto County. However, had we stayed with DeSoto County, we were going to give the public schools a chance and will be sending our kids to public school in Oxford.

I have a 13 y/o grandson in Hernando schools. He was in Spotlight 3 years. I have grown children that went through Hernando & all have college degrees, one a teacher so I think Hernando is as good as any of the schools in Desoto County.
With all that said though I think the school system as a whole is lacking. It seems here they go to school to learn how to take tests. On the other hand, a granddaughter in England is really learning & doing excellent in school.
