The current Missouri flag is based off the Missouri State Guard flag btw.

One can argue why Maryland is so liberal is because of its location so far north it is close to New York, New Jersey ect. Same thing with VA and its cultural change especially in northern VA.
While I am making my best efforts to read your daily nonsense and silently let others address its fallacies, your ignorance of our state history is beyond belief. Based on other identities you hold and forums you cater to, I would suggest that in the future you spend less time getting history from racist sites like stormfront.org and more time reading a book. In fact, in light of the fact you are banned from numerous forums in the St Louis area, I would suggest you stay off the computer all together and spend some time in the library.

The Missouri State flag has nothing to do with the Missouri State Guard flag, nor the Missouri Battle Flag. The Missouri state seal, which is the only thing on the Missouri State Guard flag, was adopted by the Missouri General Assembly on January 11, 1822. That's nearly 40 years before the Missouri State Guard. The only thing on the battle flag besides the red, white and blue colors (hmm - wonder where those colors came from?) is a white Roman cross.

Missouri's state flag became official on March 22, 1913, when Governor Elliot Major made the Marie Elizabeth Oliver flag (designed by the Daughters of the American Revolution) the official state flag of Missouri. The white Roman cross failed to make it on the official state flag, while the state seal from 1822 - took center stage.

Many people in southern Missouri consider themselves southern. Many in northern Missouri, especially from Kansas City to St. Louis northward, identify with the midwest.
Most people I have encountered personally do not really say one way or the other. They just say they are from Missouri, thinking that should be a sufficient description.

Also, an earlier post stated the battle of Westport was in Kansas, near Kansas City. Actually, it was a town in Missouri. Westport is now a neighborhood in KC, MO.

I simply consider myself a MO Ozarker. As for the rest, as it should be after 150 years.

Missouri History - Flags Of The Rebellion

While this modern Missouri flag never flew during the war of 1861-1865, it is shown here, so as to illustrate it's Confederate roots. The Missouri State Flag has been around for a long time, and has went through many revisions and changes of design. The pattern we see today is the result of all these changes of design, but the basic style has been somewhat the same all along. Missouri finally adopted this style as the official flag almost 60 years after the War Between The States on March 22, 1913. The flag consists of three horizontal stripes of red, white and blue. These represent valor, purity, vigilance and justice. In the center white stripe is the Missouri coat-of-arms, circled by a blue band containing 24 stars, denoting that Missouri was the 24th state. Yet, it is important to keep in mind that the modern Missouri flag was based on the CONFEDERATE Missouri State Guard Flag pictured below.

The misspelling, battered syntax, and lack of paragraphs point to somebodys homemade webpage that reeks of ignorance of Missouri history.

The SOS site has errors in it too I've found. One is when explaining the "rump" session in Neosho where the secession was passed it states that there was not enough members for a quorum in either house. Yet the state has in its posession a offical roll call that shows a quorum was present on the senate side.

One has to wonder why Maryland has become so liberal for?
Two reasons... firstly, the rapid industrialization of Baltimore from the 1920's through WWII. Secondly, all the government employees around DC. Maryland has been voting lock stock and barrel with the northeast for around 70 years now.

Actually, minus the government employees/transplants, Maryland is pretty similar to Missouri except that Baltimore holds far more influence over its state than St Louis does. Of course, that's a big difference I guess.

NYMTman is pretty much on to it. Maryland leans more left simply because it's more urbanized. Maryland's average density is 541.9, where Missouri's is 86.9 (stats courtesy of Wikipedia).
