Small Missouri town is magnet for bizarre crimes - CNN.com (http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/10/18/tragic.skidmore.ap/index.html - broken link)

Bizarre crimes disparage a number of good down to earth people.

I know about the famous crime of Skidmore, Missouri. There is an episode of City Confidential on A&E about it.

I'm from Maitland, a couple of miles south of Skidmore..my family cemetery is there..my dad knew one of the perpetrators (McElroy) it was just one of things that happened. One that most want to forgot. Skidmore is just a sleepy little town..same daily routine as any small town "America".

I was born in Skidmore on my Aunt's farm. All of my family (Twaddell) lived there. Moved to Maitland and stayed there til 4th grade. My brother and Sis visited there a few years back to see family graves etc. and sounds like the towns are pretty sparsely populated. Seems to be less and less of these little towns left.

Not really. There are still hundreds of really small towns, say under 500 people, throughout Missouri and the rest of the Midwest. The difference is that fewer and fewer of them have any sort of "local economy" at all.

Speaking of Skidmore, the 30th anniversary of Kenny McElroy's killing is coming up this Sunday.

It's been a few years since this thread was started and the CNN link is dead. For anyone who is wondering what the members are discussing, here is the same article on USA Today - still from 2007 - but still working

Default McElroy

That SOB bought the farmhouse that my grandfather and mother were born in. After he was killed Trina burnt it down (or so I heard). At any rate the house was burnt down. My uncle was subpoenaed to testify as he was down that day. I asked all of my aunts and uncles and they all stuck to the same stort. Nobody knew who did it; Must have been someone from Kansas City

I don't think Trina burnt it down, she left the area right after the murder and I don't think she ever returned. It burned about a year after Ken was killed, I think it's generally accepted that someone in his family burned it down because they were tired of people driving by and taking pictures.

Pretty interesting thread.

My family here in Austin, Texas followed the McElroy "saga" when it was in the news decades ago.

My Dad was raised in Graham & lived there from about 1912 until he left for college at Mizzou in 1929. My grandparents lived there until Grandpa passed away in 1960 & Grandma in 1971. They are buried in the Prairie Home Cemetery on the road to Maitland. My grandparents owned & ran the automobile repair garage & adjoining little restaurant on the mainstreet in the middle of Graham for 34 years (1923-1957) until they sold it to their mechanic Gene K..

One of my Dad's good friends knew McElroy & actually had hunted some with him a couple of times, but was not a friend.

Was kinda funny when the lawmen & later the feds couldn't find any witnesses even though a bunch of Skidmore citizens were present. Good riddance to bad rubbish. lol

I used to spend the summers in Graham in the late '40s into the late '50s, so the area is very familiar to me. Last time I visited was in 1985 with my Dad (he passed away at age 90 in 2002). When Dad retired from the US Army in 1959, we moved to Austin.

We knew a lot of folks around there and some in Maitland.

One of my brothers traveled to Graham for their town fair & parade a couple months ago. He visited with some cousins who still live in the county.

Guess I'll have to make it up there sometime soon to check out the old "hometown" & pay my respects at the cemetery.
