Well... that's it. Me, wife and brand new baby son are planning on moving from this state we call Louisiana and really considering MO. Where is the best place to go? What is the most perfect place in MO to go? I know, I know... impossible question....well how bout this. I'm wanting to kinda stay in the southern part. Maybe say around branson or so. I'm afraid that that area being touristy and stuff will be kinda expensive to live. We will probably be on a budget of say... 100K. What would that buy in southern mo? Also what is the terrain like there? Hilly? Mountains? Are there a bunch of gravel roads there? A lot of snow, and if so how do they defrost the road? liquid or rock salt? I work in oil refineries so I have stayed in many different states just haven't made it up that way yet. And how is the deer hunting there? Thanks in advance. Ya'll seem like ya'll have a great state.

oh wow, Missouri is such a big state you have alot of options. Well I guess the question to ask is do you want rural or suburban? With two big cities like KC and St. Louis theres a big suburban element. Another question is what kind of weather do you want? Do you want frigid very midwestern winters or milder modified Ozark winters? Do you want warm humid subtropical climate..that would be the bootheel. Southwest Misouri is my personal favorite (I live here) because the its a nice mix of southern and midwestern, doesnt get too cold, beautiful rolling Ozark Prairies, old houses, lots of history, close proximity of things to do and see in the Ozarks of both Missouri and Arkansas. The Springfeld area has very affordable housing. Not sure about the deer hunting. I think they may use a combination or rock salt and liquid on the roads. Winters are either feast or famine, there may be 1 inch of snow the whole winter or in the case of 2002-2003 they may have over 35 inches (i think that was a rare one). The area can be hit by brutal ice storms like in 2007 or winter can me filled with endless mild sunny days without a drop of winter. The people are fairly friendly and down to earth...Hope this helps out

Are you still interested in PA? Or have you finally decided on MO? You mentioned deer hunting. Actually, now is deer season in Missouri. It runs from Nov. 15th through Tuesday, Nov.25th. Certain rules apply for specified counties. Doe only, 4 point one side bucks, etc. Larger deer north of the Missouri River, more corn fed. Here in central Missouri a good variety of size, weight, rack, etc.

As far as expenses are concerned, the Branson area is a good choice. May I suggest that you contact one of the posters here: 'Lake Junkie'? Very knowledgeable about the area and quite helpful. Good luck to you whichever you decide.

Thank you for the post. I'm more of a rural type of person. But would like to be within and hour or so from a nice sized place. Like springfield. Also being from louisiana I would rather have some milder winters... but It would be nice to see some snow. The reason I ask about salt is that I'm in love with my vehicles. Last year I was working in ohio and they use the liquid salt and it will just ruin a vehicle very quick. And I do here a lot about southwest MO. Anyone from the surrounding branson area know anything about the real estate there? I just dont know where to get started really.

Well I worked in OH for a while and met with a lot of people from PA and just dont think it is my type of living. TOOOOOO cold for one thing. most of the people from there dont recommend it either... not to mention they are kinda rude.

Ouch, sorry to hear that. Again, please DM Lake Junkie. I am sure she would/could provide you with some first hand information. Personally, I like the Springfield area. Not a large city and not really rural either. Major highways nearby to get you anywhere. Excellent shopping. Great health care, hospitals, doctors, etc. Try the CD search feature for Springfield and other towns/cities that interest you. Take Care and good luck.

I had a friend who lived in Nixa, just south of Springfield.

You could certainly live well in the Springfield area, but you'd better get a nice winter coat. It's not Chicago, but I live in Southeast Missouri and it's already flurried here twice this winter.

I would think $100k could get you a decent home. Missouri's pretty cheap.

Just searching here http://realestate.yahoo.com/Missouri/Springfield for between 75,000 and 100,000 dollars I got 135 results.

Most newcomers to Missouri should choose one of three areas: Kansas City, St. Louis or Springfield-Branson. All of them have malls, Starbucks, Target, Red Lobster, etc., etc., so you'll really feel like you haven't moved from whatever city you just left. Most newcomers should not choose to live in outstate Missouri. We are very rural and we have learned to get by. We drink our coffee in diners, not Starbucks, while wearing our hardware store or feed store caps. We go shopping and get our clothes at Wal-Mart. We go out to eat at one of the local restaurants and order the special. You probably wouldn't like it out here in the country. You will like it in one of the three metro areas, though, so come on and help us fill up this state.

Bet you get another email about this one, but what you wrote was all true.
