Missouri State University is the new name for Southwest Missouri State. It is a part of the regional university system that includes: UCM, NWMSU, SEMSU, and Truman State.

The MU system includes UMKC and University of Missouri Rolla (UMR).

UCM used to be CMSU, and Truman State used to be NEMSU.

MSU has a solid reputation, it is in a great city with a beautiful campus. I would not hesitate to send my children there, although I am a UCM alumni.
and it would be my first choice.

Yes, they are one and the same, gvcop32 is right. I graduated from MSU (when it was still under the old name) in 2002, from the teaching program, and am currently employed as a teacher. The program is really good; it was undergoing some improvements while I was there, so it's hard for me to vouch for the current status. The university was started as a college for teachers (a long time ago), so it goes without saying that a large number of students are in the teaching program.
The campus is very safe, though very large--still, there are a couple of parts I wouldn't want to walk on alone at night. It has a great shuttle system to help students get around safely, even to visit downtown (the service is paid for in tuition). It had a beautiful campus when I was there; this winter, however, there was a terrible icestorm that took lots of trees down, some over 100 yrs old (saw pics). I'm sure once they get all of that cleaned up, it will be even better.
It's a great place with a very active student body that contributes a lot to the Springfield community. It is not known as a "party college" per se, though there are several frats and sororities. I never lived on campus, but I do know a lot of people that did and can provide you with many more details via pv msg or email of you wish

I think there may be some confusion in this thread.

The University of Missouri is in Columbia, with U of M campuses in KC, St. Louis and Rolla.

Missouri State University (formerly Southwest Missouri State) is in Springfield, with a campus in West Plains (and maybe one other). As far as I am aware, there is no affiliation between MSU and the other regionals - CMSU, Truman, SEMO, Missouri Southern, etc.

Both MU and MSU are excellent schools. Though as a Mizzou grad I think MU is slightly better.

If I was reading correctly earlier they all have a connection for a outreach school so its like borrowed space on another campus to keep commuting down. Is that right?

My daughter in law is interested.

There are many outreach campuses of the different State colleges, and yes, it is to keep commuting down as well as offer continuing education opportunities to adults of smaller communities.
