I am considering a move to Hannibal, MO. I'm an artist, signmaker, RN. 60 yr. old, no baggage or attachments, kid grown. Can anyone give me any encouragement in this direction?

Default Hannibal

Hi A.J.,

I have relatives in Hannibal and spent many vacations as a child visiting this town. There is a certain romance to Hannibal, the childhood home of Samuel Clemens growing up on the Mississippi, but the city fathers never really created a "charming" downtown to capitalize on this. Shopping is limited in Hannibal, but a new bridge will take you to Quincy which has a nice mall. There are some nice residential areas. My relatives live in a beautiful home with a lot to die for, but I believe that real estate is rather expensive there. They also drive to St. Louis for their medical needs as they don't feel comfortable with Hannibal's medical community. I don't know if Hannibal and its residents are "friendly" and "welcoming" to transplants. It is a "good old boys" town. My relatives has lived there all their lives so they know everyone and all their secrets. The pace of everyday life is slower, and the river is, what can I say, the "mighty Mo". It doesn't get any better than that if you're a "river rat" like my family. Good luck to you.

Hannibal's newspaper, the Hannibal Courier-Post (you can Google it) sponsors an on-line community called Hannibal Rivertalk. I'm considering moving there in a year and have been getting questions answered there for several days now.

Here's the link:

I've been in Hannibal a number of times and outside of the occassional flood, I don't see why you wouldn't be quite happy there. The only hospital in the mid-west rated consistently in the Top 25 Hospitals in the US is Barnes-Jewish hospital at St. Louis.

Good luck on your move and welcome to Missouri. By the way, Troy is just up the pike a bit. You will like it too. Its a fun and quickely growing town.
