So what could be done to turn the Regional into an International ?

Simple really... direct international flights. Or, you could be Pensacola and just call it "international".

Ikr. But awhile back I talked to someone at the FAA and they said all you have to have is travelers either departing from or arriving at your airport, the flights in between do not matter. They also said something about international cargo as it could count. Either way Pensacola had a flight to The Bahamas for what, a few months? Just to change the name. Good news for us is that next year, Carnival will be offering a cruise to The Bahamas as well the Key West, Cayman Islands and Belize.

Lol at the last sentence. I've been told that Mobile's airfair would significantly decrease if the regional became international. I,don't know how true that is though.

Ha, the change in p-cola's airport was a marketing tool. This is a quote from the NorthEscambia.com news article dated May 3, 2017 titled :Pensacola Gulf Coast Regional Airport has a new name — the Pensacola International Airport:

"Pensacola Mayor Ashton Hayward said the name change was part of a broader effort to position Pensacola as an attractive place for businesses to locate or expand.

"We live and compete in a global economy, and we need to prepare and position our city to be competitive,” said Hayward.

The airport does not offer any international flights."

Other airports without international flights with International airport names include Biloxi-Gulfport, Lakeland Florida, and Tallahassee.

Lakeland, FL did a study in 2015 on whether or not to change the name of its Lakeland Linder Regional Airport to Central Florida International Airport. The study stated that it could attract more business based on the assumption that it is a bigger airport. Apparently that is a thing. Maybe Mobile should jump on the band wagon.....it could make a difference in landing some other international company.

It's certainly worth investigating. Some jazzy marketing name could work too, like:
Mobile Bay Intercontinental Airport
Central Gulf Coast Airport
Mobile Bay Jetport
Mobile Coastal Airport
