I am moving to Mobile from Toronto and I am curious about the shopping in the area? I will need to go to a mall fairly soon after I arrive to buy a dress for a wedding and I was wondering if there were any good department stores or malls that I could look around.

If someone could recommend a great hairdresser and manicure place, that would be great too!

New Orleans, a 2 hour drive would be your best bet for shopping (Shoppes at Canal Place and Riverwalk Outlet Collection downtown) and Lakeside Center in Metairie, LA (suburban New Orleans) are the only decent major shopping destinations. Macy's in New Orleans is like the Bay and and Dillard's in both NOLA and Mobile are also similar The shopping scene is way beneath Toronto in out region, the closest would by the 5 hour drive away Atlanta, Ga. Our sole mall shoppes at bel air is currently under renovation to be scaled up we are getting an H&M and currently Dillard's is our only good department store, but Belk is going to be improved and relocated to Sears' larger former spot and will carry more high-end stuff. Nouveau and Estetica are the best salons I can think of right out of my head in our area, if you are looking for fancy that is. Saks Fifth Avenue New Orleans is like Holt Renfrew in Canada.

Seriously? You are sending her/him on a 2 hour (realistically 2 1/2 hour) drive out of town for a shopping trip??? That's ridiculous.

The shopping scene is just like any regular midsized city. For dresses, I either shop at Dillards or some of the cute boutiques at the mall or Talbots, Loft, and those types of stores at Legacy Village. They also have some cute boutiques there. I'll admit, I've bought dresses at Forever 21 at the mall for weddings and parties, and they've sufficed. The shopping isn't amazing or anything here, especially for us women, but it's decent nonetheless. I moved here from Birmingham where the shopping is superb, but the shopping down here is good just on a smaller scale if you get what I'm saying. It's probably best though, honestly, because lord knows that I spend entirely too much money.
