I'm preparing to start a home-based copy editing/proofreading business, "employing" just me, myself and I (sole proprietorship). I've filled out the online business license application, but can find no mention of what this might cost. I do know that the cost can vary, but can anyone give me a ballpark figure so that I don't keel over when I get the bill? I'm within Mobile city limits.

Thanks much.

The license is $130 per year. Is proofreading different from copy editing? The reason I ask is because if so you will need two licenses because each line of business would require a license if it amounts to more than 10 percent of your gross receipts. For example, if they are different and 60% of your biz is copy editing and 40% is proofreading then it would require two licenses, however if 95% of your biz is copy editing and 5% is proofreading, then only 1 license would be required.

I think is is generally $130 if the income is under 1 million but i'm not 100% sure about that.

It's a combined copyediting and proofreading business - there is some overlap between the two. Some clients want one, some the other, some both. I heard back from the Revenue Examiner and received a pro-rated license invoice. Just billed for one license, so it must be fine with them, as I indicated both services on the application.

I have a feeling that I won't have to worry about hitting a million in revenue.

Thanks!
