I have an elementary school age child with a high IQ. I am looking for a program or activity to interest him. Other children his age have different interest. He is a very good and happy child ,but has trouble finding interests outside school.

HELP!!

Hi,
I am looking for the same thing too. I have 2 kids who are probably 2 grades above their "birthdate" grades. I am not sure how Mobile schools (probabably the private schools) are willing to let kids skip grades.
Do share any information you have

I know Mobile private schools aren't very keen to letting children skip grades. I have been to 3. St. Mary's, St. Pius, and Mobile Christian and I have a high IQ and no skipping grades.

Try astronomy, there are plenty of wonders to contemplate, and then, there is the maths aspect.
I know as a child I found it awe-inspiring, I still do.

Perhaps the marine biology facility at Dauphin Island has programs. I'm sorry, I can't remember the name of it.
And the University of South Alabama, University of Mobile or Spring Hill College might offer programs.

Most private schools will agree to test your child, sometimes with a fee. Then they will decide. But by now, most, if not all of the more popular private schools are full.

Default Also Univ. of South Alabama, etc.

Also the University of South Alabama has their "special courses" for children and adults.

The city of Mobile has after school programs for both children and adults that are pretty extensive & very reasonable. You can go to Welcome to the City of Mobile Alabama view the pdf of the Fall 2008 catalog. Click on Community Activities. They really have an amazing array of classes! They are held in various schools around town. Foreign languages would be a good place to start. They also have sports, too.

I also forgot about Dauphin Island Sea Lab down on Dauphin Island; they have many classes for children.
Alabama School for Math and Science, a boarding school in Mobile for 11th and 12th grade students (sometimes 10th grade too) will have classes for exceptional students mostly in the summer.

Mobile Museum of Art has classes, too. We've taken these and they are really good. They have a wonderful facility for teaching in their new building.

If interested in acting, Playhouse in the Park is well known for working with kids(they don't put up with playing around, though, from what I heard) and now there is a new one run by Chris Paragone that allows everyone a chance to act.
