It is so wonderful that Carnival is expanding by putting a new cruise ship "Fantasy" which will carry 170,000 passengers. It is going to wonderful and exciting for Mobile. Now how about getting affordable airlines into Mobile and Pensacola to get the tourists here. Without affordable airlines all the tourists will go to Miami, and Ft. Lauderdale and outside Orldano. So is there any plans for the boom to bring in Southwest Airlines which will bring cheaper flights into the area?

170,000 passengers ???! The present Fantasy doesnt hold anymore than roughly 2,000 . I dont think the new Oasis of the Seas holds 170,000 people .

Ok, yes this thread is old, but I don't know how realistic it is for us to persue a larger airport. We have New Orleans and Pensacola too close by. For instance, Pesacola is expanding, we aren't. I think Mobile Regional Airport will stay how it is for some time to come.

You're right, plus the roads around that airport are already outdated and very congested.

^^^ I agree and one of Mobile`s biggest mistakes is the location of our airport( not interstate assessable).Smaller metros such as Huntsville,Montgomery,Pensacola, and Tallahassee have better airports.

True, I think if they ever decided they had to have a bigger airport, they'd be better off going up i-65 where there is plenty of land and interstate acess, but like Ruth said with airports in Pensacola and New Orleans and even mother hub in Atlanta, don't think expansion is necessary, just got to deal w/ it, maybe a little fine tuning though.

The city really missed an opportunity in the 70's when moving commercial service to Brookley was considered. Think about it - nearly adjacent to the docks, direct access to I-10 & easy access from I-65, even on a potential Amtrak route, if that ever runs thru the area again. At the time, Pensacola was but a sad imitation of Mobile's air service. But now, it can pretty much never happen.

There was one peace of info that I forgot about regarding the Fantacy. The Fantacy makes 2 trips Tuesday-Thursday and Thursday-Tuesday and both trips are packed to or near capacity. So there is a possibility that the Fantacy carries 170,000 < a year. The Thursday -Tuesday trip is always packed to compacity and that is around 104,000 a year. If you were to add the Tuesday-Thursday trip that would be another 80,000 a year because I doubt that a trip as short as that one would carry 104,000 like the other one. So with that info I believe that the Fantacy does handle over 170,000 a year !!
