Please help. I will be moving next spring and am trying to decide between Mobile and Montgomery. I've been doing some researach on the web but have found no comparisons only separate descriptions of the two.
I originally wanted to be in Lower Alabama (L.A.) which I believe is Mobile but am re-thinking that due to the hurricanes (I'm moving from Florida ).
Figured I'd ask some Bamas (is that an acceptable term?). What are your suggestions/opinions re: affordable housing, well paying jobs, crime, things to do (for single 30something female)? THANKS A MIL!

I'm not too familliar with Mobile as I am with Montgomery. Mobile's bigger from what I do know, but Montgomery does have some perks. It has been getting loads of recent growth and development ala Eastchase area.

And compared to the surrounding cities, Montgomery's job rate is decent, though I am not sure on that part. I know its employment is better than the areas like Wilcox and Dallas county. Montgomery does have a fair bit of crime much like any place does. Main thing is to avoid the shady spots because there are some. And I've never been around the nightlife part, but I don't too much trust any clubs in Montgomery, period.

Overall, Montgomery's a decent place to live, though I prefer looking into the Mobile area...provided my transfer to schools goes through

I've only been to Mobile once in my lifetime, and I liked, which was almost 10 years ago.

Some of the regulars can give you more insight into Mobile though.

And it's been a long time since i heard of the LA term. Someone in Pittsburgh used it and I had no idea what they were talking about until they said lower alabama

Just my opinion.

Montgomery is great for easy access to Auburn games if you are an Auburn fan (I am). Other than that, I prefer Mobile. But I am a former local of Mobile, so I am admittedly biased.

If you cannot take a little hurricane here and there you are not a man. And if you are woman, then you are not a woman. I say that all in good fun of course .

Both cities are trying to improve to attract more people. Mobile has different food that you can't get anywhere plus it's on the gulf coast and a whole different economy than Montgomery. Montgomery has colleges, pretty good retail, casino's surrounding the city, and some decent entertainment in the city.

I've visited Mobile once or twice a year for the past 12 years, and I've been to Montgomery twice. I'd vote for Mobile all the way. It's bigger with a lot more to do and see. Montgomery is nice, but it feels pretty rural (with the exception of all the gov. buildings).

Just curious, but is there some reason you are not considering Birmingham or Huntsville? Also, the type of employment you will seek may be important as to which area to choose.

Hurricanes will be a definite possibility with Mobile. Northern Alabama has more seasonal changes--which I love. One thing for sure, it's different in Alabama....and I mean that as a compliment!

Hurricanes are a possibility, but usually nothing to worry about. Mobile has a low cost of living. Crime isn't bad (although I know some will say otherwise). Things to do: downtown has the nightlife (bars, clubs, indie movie theatre, music, art, Mardi Gras, etc.) as well as great dining. Job opportunities would depend on the job.

Thanks for responding so quickly. It looks like Mobile is in the lead. I've never been to Alabama. My 1 and only child/son just left for college/Tallahassee and I want to just get up and go, start fresh (but still be near enough in case he needs me). For some reason when I thought of Mobile I thought-small, quiet, country town and when I thought of Montgomery I thought-big, noisey, city. I was leaning toward Mobile because I love the beach and appreciate quiet.I didn't consider B'ham because I read a few bad remarks about it...Huntsville never came to mind. Before my move I planned on making 2 trips to visit both places on both occassions-the 1st during the week for about 5 days and the 2nd on a weekend. As far as the job market goes I am an LPN but have also worked as a secretary.Thank you in advance for your additional replies and suggestions.

They both are growing in parallel to each other.
Because of the expansions with the port of Mobile, Montgomery is seeing a increase in activity which might lead to an outer loop project for Montgomery.

If your kid is going to school in Tallahassee and you want to be relatively close, I wouldn't go for Northern Alabama. Mobile & Montgomery are both relatively close to Tally. Mobile being all I-10, and just under 4 hours driving distance. Montgomery may not be all interstate but 231 is a good drive and is also about 3 hours, 45 minutes driving distance.
Both cities have their pros and cons. I've lived in both. Mobile for 6 years and Montgomery for just under a year.
