October is almost over, my birthday is almost here (Whoopee) and we still have flowers.
I just took these pictures this morning in our yard. We live between Noxon and Trout Creek in Sanders County very close to the Idaho panhandle. We have had it freeze at night already, these flowers must be pretty tough.

Too bad knapweed is an invasive species... pretty flower, like a bachelor button. (Great closeup photo!) From the article it sounds like planting grasses and lupine might help control it. My sister yanked up 3 big bagfuls from her property near Bozeman! A bunch of its cousins grow in the desert. Trouble is, nothing will eat it, and pretty soon it takes over. Ever seen a field gone to starthistles (let alone tried to walk through 'em)?? it's a related species with spines like big needles.

Here the first hard freeze right after the first big rain in years means the whole desert is now bright yellow with rabbitbrush blooming!! about a month early at that. Can't find any really good pictures, this is the best one I see offhand: PLANTS Profile for Chrysothamnus molestus (Arizona rabbitbrush) | USDA PLANTS
They call it deciduous but I've never seen a live plant lose its leaves in winter, and some of 'em around here are at least 10-12 years old. Spreads like wildfire. Nothing eats it either, but at least it doesn't do anything "bad".

I poked about outside today when the sun popped out to see if there were any flowers cropping up and didn't find any.
I did get some nice mushroom pictures though. Here is one of mushrooms growing out of a tree stump.

What are the little green things that look like golf tees?

Rickers, the weather has been excellent over here also . I still have petunias in a pot that are blooming. The grass is still so green and we had an actual fall with leaves turning and not freezing green on the tree. I am loving every minute of it. We have mushrooms but the flat rounded kind. I saw a cow kicking one the other day.

The pansies in our flower beds wake up every morning with frostcicles all over them. Then they thaw and go about their business as if nothing had happened.

I have often wondered why it is that, when we refer to a human as a 'pansy' it means weakling or wuss or such. Pansies are among the heartiest flowers around.
