My husband just accepted a job in Sidney and we are expected to move in January '11. We are coming from a large city in CA and are so excited for the change. We have no idea about the area, though, and won't be able to make a trip prior to our move to check it out. I obviously have tons of questions!

1. We are a young family, early 20's with a 5 month old daughter. We want to live in a nice, safe neighborhood. Our home budget is about $200,000. My husband will be working in Sidney, but is willing to commute about an hour if needed. What city/area offers the most for families? Generally speaking, what could that price get us in terms of house size, land, etc?

2. We will probably be renting for a bit before we can buy a house. Any recommended apartment complexes or rental agencies?

3. I am an avid equestrian and hope to own a horse or two. What kind of activities/facilities does the community offer for horse owners? Is there a certain area that would be better than others?

4. Is there a selection of Christian/Baptist churches in the area?

5. What is the general political viewpoint? Liberal? Conservative?

That's all for now.. I'm sure I'll have more tomorrow. Thanks

Sidney? I've heard of that, I think...

Australia, right?

Being as you are coming from California, I hate to be the one to say this, but there are no cities near Sidney (MT).

All the rest will make sense once you visit Extreme Eastern Montana. (You should read what Custer had to say about it.) Anyhow, you could probably get a mansion over there for $200K with enough land to raise horses and a few other things as well. Miles City is known as Cowboy Town, USA.

There are lots of good Christian churches all over Montana, the Sidney/Glendive area is no exception.

Good luck and hurry-up in arriving. We can always use the help in paying taxes.

Haha yes, my family thought Australia as well. Just a slight difference...

Thank you for your help. I hate California and the big-city life, and am very much looking forward to rural MT. Currently, our 200k will barely get us anything... What a nice change that'll be!

Hello and welcome
I am sure you have this link
Sidney Area Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture : Sidney Montana
Sidney Herald - Sidney, Montana

You might find some help in them. You will need to refer to your new home as in Eastern Montana, we are a big state and the two sides are very different in climate and population. Read the North Dakota forum also since you will be so close to the border you might find even more information over there.

Sidney is a nice little town with a nice hospital. I think the oil work in ND is causing prices to rise so I would not hesitate too long in the housing market.
Stop by the "porch" and visit.

I just found a real estate link under relocation on the chamber site.

Thank you for the links. I had come across them before in Google... I quickly found that if you Google "Sidney, MT" there's only so much that shows up

How is the climate different from Western to Eastern MT?

The oil industry is what's bringing us to MT, as I'm sure it is for many people. I haven't been able to find many houses for sale or rent in the area, so am grateful that we still have 2 months to contact realtors and find something.

Oh! That's an easy one, so I'm on it: The climate is way better in Western Montana than it is in Eastern Montana.

Happy to be a help.

this link explains it pretty well.
Montana Weather : A Guide to the Weather in Montana

Again I would get to know someone in the chamber of commerce asap. Many properties are sold without realtors and you will have to often know someone who knows someone.

Someone told me once that it is warmer in Alaska than eastern Montana. I think that is true. Check out the North Dakota forum also for Wiliston ND. That is close to you (in terms of close for here)
People speak of travel distance in terms of 50 miles being right down the road. I know, it takes getting used to.

BTW go to my profile and look at my Eastern Montana album for a few views of the area.

If you wind up on the wrong continent, check your spelling

Sidney might compare to... oh, maybe some of the smallest burgs around Bakersfield (albeit minus the Hispanic influence) -- more of a real town than Weed Patch but nowhere near the size of Wasco, and generally less spread out. Does that give you an idea?

Climate -- think high desert but 20 degrees cooler in summer and 40 degrees colder in winter. Not a lot more rainfall, but some snow. Expect more peace and quiet than you know what to do with.

(I'm a ways down the road the other way, near Rosamond/Lancaster. But I grew up in MT. It always amuses me how the view out my front window looks exactly like Montana sageland, with the same distant mountains.)

Bah, you Western MT types have never seen the sun!! If you ever did, you'd run screaming from the UFO in the sky!!!

We high desert and plains types like our sunshine and blue sky, year round!! A fair trade for more wind (well, I like the wind too), less snow (you can have my share), and more extreme temps (now those I could do without!)
