Also, if you buy stuff at Wal-Mart, who knows where your money will be sent to? But if you shop at your local stores, especially privately-owned ones, you will help your local economy by keeping the money you spend within the area that you live.

From what people have said so far, I would probably like northeastern MT. I hardly ever go to Wal-Mart, so a local grocery store would be fine. I don't really mind the cold either, but I HATE snow. How much snow do you get in a typical winter in the Glasgow area?

Not too deep-except the drifts from the wind. But it can stay around for a LONG time.

Suggestion: Definitely visit the Glasgow area for a least a week in mid January/ mid February, before you make your decision. Also look up on the internet the weather statistics for Glasgow for the winter months & then compare the numbers to your location in NY. AND don't forget about the WIND, WIND, WIND in northeast MT. Minus 50 degrees wind chill is common, and minus 70 is on record..

To help answer the original question, you should keep in mind that this part of Montana has an aging population. There are not many jobs there and much of eastern Montana is the textbook definition of rural flight. That being said, I have never met anyone from eastern Montana who is not a real, down to earth, friendly person.

Ya, you betcha!
You are isolated over here, it is colder than a well digger's knee, there are few jobs, the deer have it out for your rig, the water is terrible, forget your Starbucks and you better make friends with the post office or your will not get your mail.

but...
If you want endless space, hear the coyotes at night, see pronghorn and thousands of birds including bald eagles it is the place for you. Just do not expect to get anything done here quickly. BTW we have had alot of snow this year!

Isn't Eastern Montana affected by the same oil boom that is causing Western North Dakota to experience record economic growth?

If that is in fact the case then I find it hard to believe that there are no "jobs" there.

From what I understand, there is not much for exploration or developement on the Montana side yet. Yes, the small towns close to the border are being filled up as far as rentals go because people are willing to drive a couple hours to get to their North Dakota locations.

Eventually Montana is going to be hit with the work.
