If you live in town, you shouldn't have a problem. But if you live in the country, you need to worry about predators. Coyotes, owls, eagles, hawks and such will be a big threat to your dog.

Could not agree more. Since 2006 my 5 yr old Brittany neutered male has traveled with me - in his travel crate - in my SUV...over 63,000 miles. Got him at 7 weeks in March 2006. He replaced another Britt that passed at 13 1/2. He goes with me to: Church; the doctor; shopping; to eat out (many local restaurants both here and in AZ have had me go out and get him and have him lay at my feet at the table). In other words, he goes everywhere with me!

As EH has said: "He is my companion 1st. Following that designation,---he is my bird hunting dog; my protector; my "visitor-announcer" -- one bark only; he also is my "alarm clock"--6:30 am every morning -- again, one bark. other than that, be does not bark. To leave him home alone (either outside in the fenced dog-run or in the Utility room) when I have to go someplace......is not a consideration. His travel crate, is his "security blanket"---it is his 2nd home---he loves it.

Being a hunting dog and loves to run through the brush and woods, he encounters lots of wildlife. Thus, at approx 6 months I introduced him to a "training collar" with a "beeper-horn" on the collar and activated by a transmitter in my hand. Range approx 3000 feet. Other than using the services of a professional dog trainer to "Snake-Brake" him--using a 4 foot, defanged Rattler, I have trained him to not chase or run deer, elk or turkeys, and to return to me by sending a "2-Beep" signal. Having a well-trained dog such as Timber or my Rex is a daily pleasure and the fact that they never complain or argue......is an added bonus

Laws vary greatly in the United States from state to state. For example, leaving a dog in the car in Nevada can result in a fine ($500 min. in Summer) or imprisonment for animal abuse/cruelty. In California, there are laws for any aspect of leaving a dog in the car unattended. These laws were codified because people in these states are too damn stupid to use common sense. In fact there may be a law in California against common sense.

Not only do the laws vary from state to state, but some people perceive they vary by economic status. For example, in Beverly Hills some people believe that it is Ok to leave the dog in the car if he has just been to the pet spa, so his appearance does not embarass the owner. Also, the dog is allowed to use the cell phone if he is not driving. Further, dogs left in Mercedes must be provided a rear seat DVD to discourage them from barking. A selection of "Lady & The Tramp", "101 Dalmatians", etc. is acceptable, but doggy porn is a finable offense.

In contrast, in Montana, I am not aware of a specific law that assumes its citizens are idiots. Common sense prevails, with windows left down and waterbowls available. When my field trial dogs must be left alone they have cooling blankets and battery operated fans in their kennels for safety. Yes, I leave the windows to the truck down. 99% of the people here are ethical enough not to try to steal your car, and the remaining 1% are smart enough not to try to stick their hand in my truck with my dogs inside.

She should be fine. When I got out of the service in San Diego, we moved back up here and had a very small teacup poodle. The first winter we were very careful with her. We'd only put her out for a few minutes and then we'd watch her very carefully. The second winter, she was outside playing in the snow with the kids.

Fine hunting dog. I always told the ex, I don't want a dog that will take a burglar. I want a dog that will wake me up so I can take the burglar.

The one thing I noticed when we moved to Montana was the number of trucks in parking lots that were running. Folks would be in a cafe eating with their big ol' truck idling in the parking lot. This was for the benefit of the dog that was inevitably sitting behind the wheel waiting for their owner to come back. In the summer, the AC would run and in the winter, the heater would run. During the rest of the months of the year... well, please refer to the picture taken by Clark Fork .

Basket, I also have a little chihuahua and he has adapted very well to the cold weather here in Colorado. He has a very warm parka with a hood that he wears when we go outside...yes i do get some weird looks with him all dolled up but at least I know he is warm. when he is inside he has his blanket and is always under it. I say bring your your four legged friend, after all you can't leave family behind!

Glad you guys liked the doggie pic! Wheh I took it there was actually another pickup on the left, with another dog in it, but it wouldn't fit into the picture . Look at the Weimaraner in the middle--isn't there another dog inside the cab to his left, a black dog with pointed ears? Or am I seeing dogs everywhere?
