Hi all, completed my military stent and headed back to South Carolina. Going to drive my little car home. How safe is 90 E for weather this time of year going through Montana, South Dakota, Minnesota,Wisconsin,Illinois? Not sure if I should take a more southern route home (it will take me an extra day). I appreciate your help!

..................Unless you have a real important reason to get home very quickly........I would definitely take a more southerly route. Not only would you avoid potential severe winter storm (wind and snow) conditions (like what's occurring right now through at least Tuesday on that northern route)..., but IMHO better interstate (and secondary highway) choices. I have seen I-90; I-94; I-25; I-80; I-70; I-35 and I-29 ALL closed (DURING APRIL) due to winter storm conditions. It appears you are a young man that may possibly not have a lot of experience in driving cross country where you may QUITE possibly encounter some conditions that may not be the greatest for that "little car" you mentioned you'd be driving..

If it were me (just my opinion), I would go from Spokane to Salt Lake (via I90 & I15).....Salt Lake to To Flagstaff (via I-15 to Hwy #20(mile marker #95); to Hwy 89 to I 40.....Then east on I-40 to Memphis......and then you can pick any number of routes to your destination in S.C.......
I took that exact route 2 years ago this week coming back to Western MT from The Savannah area and would not change a thing. Good luck........Oh, I should mention that I have driven almost all of the major routes and highways in the area you have to travel through....been traveling that area (approx 35 states) since 1955...............

Honestly, it's hard to say. Today we woke to several inches of snow in the Missoula area, but by mid-afternoon we had sunshine.

Your best bet is to check the road report before you head out. You can find it at: Montana Traveler Information

At the top of the Montana Forum is the Weather alert thread. The very first post in it is the Webcams along the Highway. You'll have to scroll down some because I have 4 states all in that post. Scroll down to Montana and then select which ones you want to see.

Just check weather.com! I'd type in the 10-day forecasts for all the major cities along your trip.
