My boyfriend is working by Sidney and I am going to visit him in about a week and I was looking for places we could go or things we could do. We talked about Glacier National Park or Yellowstone but with the weather the way it has been today it was only like 20 degrees at Yellowstone and that is a little bit too cold to be outside enjoying a vacation for me, i am ready for some nice weather. I live in sw mn so it is a 12 hr drive for me to get there I don't want to do a TON of driving once I get there but if it is something REALLY cool I guess I could.
Opinions would be great!

Thank you!

Sorry I should have expanded a little.
North Dakota is closer than some of the bigger park attractions from where you are...

Here is a good site to look for Montana
Official State of Montana Vacation, Recreation, Accommodations and Travel Information Website

You are in
Custer Country

Hope that helps.
And welcome to (Eastern) Montana.

Default Parks

I know that Glacier NP is still closed.

Yellowstone is barely passable between Norris and Old Faithful.

It will take at least 6 hours of driving to get to Gardiner from Sidney. You may want to investigate other things like Chico Hot Springs, Bozeman, Billings, Red Lodge.

Glacier is still inaccessible, so you can forget that at this time. If you try it sometime in June, it should be open at some point, but there is a lot of snow right now and it's gonna take a while for it to thaw enough to be passable on Going to the Sun Road.

There are great places closer to Sidney than Glacier.

Makosika State park has some breathtaking vistas especially at dawn and dusk.
The Bear Paw Mountains are just outside of Malta.
Drive down to Lewistown, the center of the state and the Snowys and Judith and Big Belt Mountains are all close.
Or you could go see the Pryors just outside of Billings.

You don't have to go to a tourist trap to see mountains, they are all over the place and there is forest service access to most of them. You can hike, see wild life, take pictures, but more importantly, away from the commercialized national parks you will meet real people at the stores or gas stations or restaruants that will give you a real feel for the state, not just some public service announcement scripted cutout paid for by tourism department dollars.

If you are thinking of moving to Montana, take the time to know what we really are. Real life is much grittier, stronger and more genuine than a touched up Photoshop print in a magazine.

Montana has a charm far beyond a nice viewscape. Take a little time to see what the prairies really are, a vast open space full of life and surprises not just the empty grassland you see from the road.
Walk the Breaks and see the fantastic forms cut by wind and rain over eons.
Take the time to look close to see the specialized forms of wildlife and people who have adapted to living in what can be a very harsh environment.

Take time to stop and breathe and listen, you can actually hear your own heart beat when you turn off the cell phone and I-pad and listen to the wind in the grass.

Montana is far more complex and beautiful than just the canned vistas from a park service turnout.

Glacier and Yellowstone are magnificent places, but they can't hold a candle to real Montana.

Have a nice trip

If you want a mix of indoor and outdoor stuff or want to at least have that option, I'd roll the 4+ hours to Billings and then pick and choose what you feel like doing in town or outside of it. You'll get some Yellowstone River scenery along the way. Depending on available time and weather you could possibly take smaller roads back to Sidney and see other stuff north or south of I-94.
