..................Hey Folks............. gotta tell you............

Friday: went out to dinner (alone) at 7 pm at a local Steak House (3 miles away) to treat myself to a quiet, light Birthday dinner--(daughter was taking me out Saturday night 'cause she had a Friday night committment). Well my "quiet, light dinner" turned into a surprise situation when it turned out that 2 other fellas were also were having their birthday dinners with their families.....this was in the small bar/Lounge area off to the side of the main restaurant. Total people in this room/area numbered about 15. Well as you may imagine it didn't take long for everybody to become quite friendly and the drinks flowed quite freely. I remember hearing several times the phrase called out:..." Hey Bar-Keep, how about another Round for the BIRTHDAY BOYS!!!.... Fun was had by all.....the ages had quite a spread: the youngest was a rancher of 48....next was me at 79.....and the older gentleman was 88 (who happens to live about 2100 feet from my place on the other side of a major 40'foot wide creek that feeds into the B.R. River. Hadn't seen him in several years and he didn't know who I was.....after about the 3rd glass of wine, you'd think we had grwn up together.

Saturday: Daughter and her husband took me out to a different restaurant for dinner 10 miles the other way and we had a nice quite time with minimal wine..........thank God.

Sunday was a quiet day after church, (rested up a little) and then met 2 of my "twice-a-week" 'ole croonies that I meet for morning coffee in towm on Wed & Fri. They took me to another place for a fabulous filet steak dinner.
So, I consider myself very lucky to live in an area where this type of a (Birthday) week-end could be enjoyed so thoroughly with good friends (some just met) and daughter and husband...................Plus we were blessed with good weather all three days....even got up to low 60's here in the Bitterroot today. I was so taken with the bright sun-light and nice temps that I took the 16 year-old convertible out of the garage for the supper tonight with my 'ole croonie friends. (They accussed me of "trooling up and down main street for chicks")..........crazy old foogies.....they wouldn't know what to do if they "ever-caught" something while trooling. Any way.........fun was had by all. Hope every body had a nice, enjoyable Easter Week End.....like me!

..............Thanks EH.

Hope you don't have any flooding problems with the "spring run-off' in the next 2 months. Due to the 140 % to 160% of normal snow-pack both in the Bitterroots and Sapphires, the county is expecting some flooding problems from a few miles south of Hamilton to some areas south of Darby.

By far, this is the most snow-pack I've seen in the mountains around here in the last 31 years.

.......For what it's worth.....Ya know.............If you live long enough in a specific area (20/30 years) here in western MT, you can clearly see the individual (and collective) effects that certain factors have on our elk herds here in Ravalli county. Example:

.......Until this spring (April), I've never had more than 21 elk (many times much less)
hang around my area (approx an area about 1 1/2 mile square) for more than a few days....maybe 10 to 12 days max.... This spring, starting about March 22nd, I've had up to 43 elk hang around (within 75 yards of the house) for several days on end.....then they'd move away (through the woods) to another location for a few days and then some would drift back toward my place. In fact, on April 3rd, I had (7) Bulls (still with antlers) and 32 cows, all grazing with-in 50 yards of the house. I keep my dog kenneled up, so they know they are safe here.

Well this morning, coming back home from town, when I got about half way (approx 3/4 mile) from the highway to my gate on the gravel road, I look off to the north (where the local pasture land ends and the woods begin), and there (grazing just like cattle) are about 75 to 85 elk on my neighbors 120 acres. This 1 1/2 mile sq area is about 3/4 mile from where the actual foot-hills begin. When I bought these 14 acres back in the late 1970s, we never saw elk...ever, down here on the flat.

IMO the deep snow in the mountains (..this year..) AND the large number of wolves in our area.. (for the last 5 years)... have changed the spring movement patterns of these elk so that they are staying very close to human habitation until they know they can make "one big mad dash" to the west and get up into the foothills ...(when forage is available and continue their upward movement into the higher mountains)... and the wolves will continue to stay down here at the lower elevations and continue to keep our white tail population under control. Up until 5 years ago, I never had elk stay around my place (maybe once or twice in the spring we'd see a single 'cow' working her way west).......they'd just move through from the flat area of the valley floor right on up into the mountains in April in a couple of days.....they'd never hang around at all. Now, this year they've been here going on 6 weeks and I'll wager they'll still be here up to mid May or longer.

Interesting living in good 'ole Western Montana, wouldn't trade it for anywhere else.

Thanks folks.....really appreciate the thought(s).

Ya know,.......when you get to this point in life, it's not the "really big events" or things of that nature that mean so much....................its the collective (effect) or meaning of lots of "little positive things" that make a person really look forward to the next day, and the next, and the next.......

Thus one of my favorite sayings: "Carpe Diem"....., and Have a good one!
